Obit

I have had this post saved in my que for ages, but just never got around to finishing or posting it. Ironic, as today I myself am heading out for what is sure to be a very sad and emotionally draining funeral. It’s one of those days that you dread, but know you need to make it through, because there are people that are suffering so much and they need your support. So I’m going to get over my issues and go. Because they deserve to have all the support in the world today.

I while back I read this obituary by a solider in Iraq who was writing about his experiences for a Colorado paper. Before he left for war, he wrote his own obituary, and made a friend promise to post it if he was killed. Today, more than ever, this really touches me.

RIP, David. We’ll miss you.

Because Nucular Isn’t a Word

I think this whole voting predicament is best put into words by a fellow blogger, Mom-101:

“In truth, I am swinging between two teams like Anne Heche in her heyday. Every time someone gives me a good pro-Hill argument I’m like yeah! She’s my woman! Go Hill! And then every time I hear a strong Obama endorsement I’m like whoo yeah! Obama! Rock on!”

The best part of this primary is for the first time since I’ve been legally allowed to vote (not counting all the times I voted in elementary school elections) I will be happy no matter who wins. Yes, I do believe one of the candidates is more qualified and has touched more issues that matter to me on the campaign trail then the other, but still, the other one is so inspiring…it would be insane not to be ecstatic if he won. To be truly inspired by politics again, that is an amazing, wonderful thing.

So get out there and vote today. Whether you’re choosing between a woman and a black man (finally, I mean, isn’t it insane that this has never happened before?) or two rich, white guys….ahem….sorry, I was trying not to be biased…I meant between a great war veteran and a successful governor…yup, totally what I meant.

Honestly, just get out and vote. For whoever. Just exercise your right. This time we really can make change for our country and our world. Do it, people!!!

All that glitters

You all know I don’t like writing about social or political issues on this site. Mostly because there are only about three of you reading regularly, and at least one is on the exact opposite of the spectrum from myself, and when I hear this person talking about a certain news channel named after a sneaky, dog-like animal similar to Swiper on Dora the Explorer (God, I’m talking politics and Dora, kill me now) I usually want to shove pencils in my eyes. So I usually stay away from all of that hoopla. Because I like my friends. And my readers.

Hi, readers!

But sometimes while watching the news, I’m very saddened by what I see. And I won’t go into hot topics like the war or the state of the country or our healthcare system or poverty or all of the things that actually mean something. Instead, lets talk about the really important stuff.

Hollywood.

Why are all of my childhood crushes dying of drug overdoses? First, Brad Renfro, who I adored in Tom & Huck. I think I plain wore that video out as a kid (there’s no accounting for taste, and besides, I was 9). To watch someone who was my age be so successful and then just crash so hard…it’s extremely sad to me. The same with Heath Ledger, with whom my crush developed when I was a teenager. And he, unlike Renfro, seemed to have an OK life. A balance. He didn’t seem to caught up in all of the craziness. He made movies that changed how I thought about the world. Films that made me cry and laugh and think. I mean, really, really think. You expect the news that someone like Britney Spears, who’s problems have been splashed all over the media, has died, but not someone like Heath Ledger.

It all makes me sad, but also shows me that everyone is human. Even when they have all the money and success in the world, even when they are fathers or mothers or sisters or brothers or friends. They can still lose sight of all of that, either through sickness or sadness or whatever else is poisoning their brains. It makes me feel both proud and lucky that I’ve been able to wipe the fog off of my glasses and view my life in the beauty and glory that it really is.

This is one of my favorite tributes to Heath Ledger. I think it’s best to remember people in their finest moments, instead of a barrage of photos over some sad music. Hopefully someday, when she’s much older, his poor daughter can watch this and see her dad as he was, instead of how the media saw him.

Prayers Please

In this weird Internet world, sometimes you find people that seem so much like you, it’s insane. People who remind you of yourself. People who piss you off. People who inspire you. And many times you forget they are real people, with lives and problems and joys just like you.

Today, one of those amazing Internet people is having a life-saving surgery. No, I don’t know her personally, but she still needs my prayers. For her kids, for her husband, for everyone in her life. Sending good vibes…

Good luck, WhyMommy!

Kiva Update

Again, I’m breaking the posting fast. Ah well, I’m still taking it slow, no big posts, definitely no real writing on my end, so I’m going to say it still counts. Darnit. It counts!

I have been working on Christmas gifts and lists and cards and cookies in my free time, and yesterday I received my first gift from my family Secret Santa, my 7-year-old cousin, Lilly. She got me another Kiva gift certificate (read about my first one here) and I’m so excited to continue helping others instead of getting more unwanted junk for myself…although a new camera lens is not considered unwanted or junk…I’m just saying.

Crap, this post is getting long. Wrap it up, woman!

So, long story short, I received an updated today on Lilian, the pharmacist from Kenya who I donated my Kiva money to in September:

“Lilian Nyasewe got her loan in September, and purchased the drugs she needed. Her business has recorded high returns thanks to KIVA lenders who made it possible, she made her first loan repayment in the month of November.Lilian is sure her business will grow. She wishes all Kiva lenders a MERRY X-MAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008!”

So, if you’re looking for a gift this holiday season, try Kiva. It is one way to make the holiday for not only the gift recipient, but for someone miles away who is getting another chance at changing their world.
