#febphotoaday

Is anyone else obsessed with Instagram? I love it so much that even though I don’t have an iPhone (sacrilege, really) I have been randomly posting photos via our two iPods. This month I decided to participate in the Instagram Photo a Day Challenge (click here for details) and while it hasn’t always been pretty (the iPod has a MUCH lower resolution camera compared to my buddies with iPhones who I am not jealous of at all waaaaaahhhh!), it has been entertaining. Here are some of my favorites from this month so far!

If you’re on Instagram, you can find me at the handle Crazy_Bananas.

In Memoriam

Yesterday I heard the news via Twitter, as I hear most news lately, especially the sad kind. Susan had passed away. While it was not totally surprising or shocking, that didn’t stop the tears, sadness and overall feelings of loss of a woman I’d never even met in person. A woman whose blog I started following years ago, very soon after she was first diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. I’ve written about Susan before, as she was a nursing mom, with a son only a bit older than Lucy and an infant who was still breastfeeding. She could have been me.

But really, she was so very her. A brilliant scientist who worked for NASA while raising her two courageous boys and fighting that bitch, cancer. She was open and honest, and she refused to stop fighting. She started the blog “Mothers with Cancer,” which has given support and supplies to mom’s all over the country. She promoted the “Army of Women,” which supports research, a cause she so desperately fought for. Even though she had every right to feel dejected and focus solely on herself, she spent so much of her time working for others. Other women. Other moms.

I simply cannot fathom what her boys (7 and 4) and her husband are going through right now. The thought of it makes me burst into tears.

In lieu of flowers, Susan’s family is asking donations be made to the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation. IBC is a type of cancer that is under-researched, and almost always fatal. The disease presents itself much differently than traditional breast cancer and is often found in nursing mothers.

Or, if you can’t afford a monetary donation right now (I hear ya), do something awesome today. Teach your kids to count stars. Hold open a door for someone. Tell someone you love how you feel. Take a deep breath and be grateful. Just like Susan always did.

Big Ideas and Time Wasters

HELLO INTERNET! AM I SHOUTING?!

Oh, I am. Sorry.

I know, I am the worst blogger in the history blogging, excepting anyone on MySpace circa 2002. I want to write here. My brain is filled with ideas and stories and fun, but the problem with BIG IDEAS is they take some time to come to fruition. So there is this awkward in between time where people are milling around with their hands in their pockets just waiting for things to come together…and that’s about where I am right now.

Also, I’ve had too much Diet Dr. Pepper. Wheeee!

So, until I can tell you fun things about my big ideas, here are a few things going on around the Internet that are making me giggle today:

10 Ways the New Mad Men Poster Could’ve Been Less Offensive

– This is what Bon Jovi would sound like if it was covered by Bon Iver.

– Oh Mizzou, never change.

– The Chuck series finale was last Friday (sob!). Here is a great article on how the show changed TV, and particularly the role of the fan.

Shit Dowager Countesses Say is the best of this meme that I’m almost totally over. Well, and this one too (I miss my modem…).

Harry Potter themed TOMS? Yeah, I’d rock that.

– My style-themed Pinterest board is so ridiculous. Could I have more glasses or brunette envy? Ugh, so obvious!

#SOPA #PIPA Blackout

Hey! You! Have you heard of SOPA or PIPA? And no, I don’t mean Her Hotness, The Sister of the Princess of Whales. I’m talking about two bills in the U.S. Congress that are poised to take away much of the freedom we currently enjoy on the world wide web. You know how sometimes I’ll link to a silly video on this site? Well, if I did that in a post-SOPA/PIPA world, the government could then prosecute me for that link. And we all know that while I do love the color orange, I’d never make it in federal prison. I bruise like a peach.

Go here to see how your congressperson is voting in regards to these overreaching bills and then contact them. For the first time since the last election, one of my senators is actually supportive of my position (I’m a liberal in Kansas, the state that is required to teach Christianity as science in public schools…wheeeee!). Mr. Jerry Moran (R-KS) is opposing PIPA, but my other congresspeople (who are we kidding, congressmen, we are in Kansas you know) are either supporting these insane bills or have not yet made their position public. I encourage everyone to contact their representatives and make your position known. Let’s keep the internet free for everyone, even this guy.

Are you on Pinterest? I know, just we we all need, right? ANOTHER social network. But my bud Mikayla insisted I should try it before I knock it, and as always, she was right. I don’t have enough time to use it the way I want, and believe me it is a major time suck, but I’ve found it to be awesome for remembering where I find outstanding ideas on the web. You can follow me on Pinterest here, and you totally should.

P.S. Anyone on Instagram? I’m not using it too much, since I’m iPhone-less (sidenote: waahhhhh!), but if you want to follow me over there, my handle is crazy_bananas. Do it.
