Dads are the Worlds Greatest

Memorial Day 2013 Bike3

This is one of my favorite photos. A few weeks ago, with much protesting, Lucy decided to learn to ride her two-wheel bike. She’d been putting it off for months, but I finally told her if she wanted a scooter for her birthday (something she wished for on a daily basis) she had to learn to ride her bike first. Her only stipulation? Daddy had to be the one to teach her.

And one day, the day pictured above, he did. She was scared and didn’t want to do it, but he gave her just the right amount of pushing, both mentally and physically. It was a great day, all made possible by a great dad.

Lulu and her dad are more similar than either of them would admit. They are both so smart and so very stubborn. Both of them know how intelligent they are, so sometimes it’s hard for them to see any other side, but their own. They are both creative and driven in a way I’ve never known. They both have huge hearts and a big sense of humor. They are both fixers, taking problems and devising solutions.

Tate has quite a bit of his dad in him as well. His eyes are just like his dad’s, although the color matches mine, the sparkle is all Trent. Both of them have eyelashes that would make a supermodel jealous. Tate’s impish grin and curious nature are so much like his dad. Tate likes to push rules and boundaries, and he knows the exact amount of charm needed to get exactly what he wants, and his dad can do the same.

All of this to say, I’m pretty lucky to have a couple of kids who are a lot like their dad. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. You are the two-wheel trainers and the dinosaur wranglers. You are the coaches and the teachers. You are the best. We love you.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing a new little boy that has joined my extended friend-family. Mr. Simon is the newest son of my good friends Heath and Mikayla, and as I’ve somehow become their resident family photographer, I was so excited to take some images of the newest member of their little family. Isn’t he just perfect? Thanks for having me, Stover Family!

Life Lately…

This guy is having a hard day :(

I had big plans for this week…like BIG ones. But as life has tended to do lately, it threw us a curve ball in the form of one very sick little boy. Tate’s been fighting an uber-virus that stared out looking like a weird allergy. Now we are in full on flu mode, with a sad boy who can’t seem to do much other than lay on me and moan. And watch Mickey Mouse clubhouse.

So in lieu of a real post, here are a bunch of Instagram photos from the last few weeks. I stopped sharing these on here because I felt like most of you were following me on Instagram anyway so it was a bit redundant. But there’s nothing like redundancy when you have puke on your PJs and you need to get a post up, right?!

(Oh, and if you’re not following me on Instagram, I wish you would! It’s become my go-to social media outlet and I love posting there. You can find me @crazy_bananas.)

Trent snapped this tonight of my sick babe...he never snuggles so this isn't a great sign :(

We had a challenging week, so I decided it was takeout and ice cream cake for dinner!

The Remedy

Post shoveling...the snow is over my boots and my toes are cold.

Today was our third snow day in less than one week. Tomorrow will be our fourth. Tonight we got the email from the school district saying they were closing for another day to keep the kids off the roads. On Facebook, there was a lot of grumbling. Me? I don’t know…I’m okay with it.

This is the first time in my life as a mother that I’m able to just…I don’t know…be okay with it. Yes, I’m way behind on freelance work. Yes, I’m behind on my blogging. Of course, I’m behind on the day job. But for the first time, I feel really at peace with all of it. We’re all behind. Offices are shutting down all over Kansas City, and clients that aren’t located here seem quite understanding of the insane weather that’s hit our area. The pressure I usually feel about to crush me during times like these isn’t here this time…it’s faded away.

About a week ago I took a good, long look at where I’m spending my time. I felt overwhelmed and lost…unsure if I was doing the right thing with my life. My schedule was out of control, but I still constantly felt like I wasn’t doing enough. I had lunch with a fabulous local food blogger I met in Salt Lake City and described my problem. She said it was obvious I was doing too much. My sounding board and mentor, Erin, said the same. It was incredible hearing women who I admire and look up to, and who do so much themselves, say I was overextending. I knew deep down that working every night until 2 a.m. wasn’t a smart plan, but I was in a hole and couldn’t get out.

A day later we were snowed in, and since then, I haven’t feel overwhelmed. I have sledded and built snow forts and shoveled driveways and watched movies and drank wine and took naps. I have stepped back. And it has been perfect.

Building snow forts with the neighbors!

The timing hasn’t been great. I have deadlines looming and emails piling up. But the snow fell and the kids were home. So I stopped. I watched, I waited, I played…and today, I feel full again.

You’re My Sweetheart

(The above version is via Maggie, but I originally heard this song on the CW because I’m 13 years old and love the CW…and even though I have been told by my Valentine that my CW watching is “all that is wrong with the world” somehow he’s decided to stick around. The world is a strange place.)

I hope you all eat lots of chocolate and drink buckets of wine today, and remember how much you are loved. Especially by me. Thanks for being there, all. Mwah!
