Mom Style – The Weekend Runaround

Mom Style 2

Welcome to the second edition of Mom Style! Yeah, I’m still sticking with the name…anywho, this is what I wore last Saturday to run my kids all over town. Seriously, dance, birthday parties, the grocery store…you name it, I was probably there looking stressed out. But my outfit was cute!

Are you guys loving the chambray trend? I swear, I never thought these shirts would come back in to fashion, but I’m so glad they have! Not only are they comfortable, and work in all kinds of weather, they are great for mama’s getting their nursing on. I have a lot of trouble these days finding shirts that are flattering to my post-two-babes middle section…yes, I am talking about the dreaded mama muffin top. And a chambray is super stylish AND it hides the offending hip flubber (I don’t like calling myself fat, or using other “fat” words, so I am now using “flubber” because it makes me laugh and realize how silly I am to worry about a little junk in my trunk. Flubber 4 Life!).

The yellow jeans are post baby and via Anthro, but I actually saw them in the store the other day, so they must be back for this season. I know colorful pants can be scary, but I feel like these are a soft enough shade, you won’t need sunglasses to wear them.

My sandals are my current favorites, Saltwater Sandals via Madewell. I bought a pair for Lucy and loved them so much I got some for myself. She calls us shoe twins, which is adorable and fleeting, since in a few years she won’t want to wear matching shoes with her mama. Carpe diem! Seize the shoes!

The sunnies are via some gas station in Kansas and I lost them today. Boo. The cute cocktail ring you can’t really see is via H&M, and I promise to get a close up of it one of these days.

Mom Style – The Maxi Dress

Hi, everybody! Welcome to yet ANOTHER new section here on Crazybananas, simply titled “Mom Style” because I’m not great at thinking up post titles. Score one for me.

My style has definitely evolved in a positive way since I had kids. I mean, you can find pictures of me out there as a young mom (and even before I was pregnant) and I look just ridiculous. Actually, that’s not accurate. I looked boring. I hadn’t found my style yet, and really looked like I felt, which was pretty blah. The past few years I’ve had a blast finding who I am in terms of my personal style, and lately I’ve been getting more and more comments from people wanting to know how to stay in the fashion loop after you have kids.

Let me preface this with a short statement: I am not a stylist, fashion expert or anything of the like. I simply love color and kooky clothes. And as I work for a bunch of engineers and am married to an IT guy, most of the comments I get regarding my clothes aren’t exactly positive. Some examples?

(Whilst wearing neon green pants) Um, I can’t hear you over those pants.

(From my 87 year old uncle) What the heck are those on your feet?! Shoes? Those are crazy.

(Sporting a polka dot dress and saddle shoes) I don’t mean to offend you, but are you trying to look old?

(Wearing my favorite glasses) Whenever I see you in those, I just want to ask you a bunch of math questions.

Yeah, so trust me, I’m not over here thinking I’m a fashion queen. But I have had good comments as well, usually from the cute barista at my local coffee shop. Obviously I’m totally legit. So I figured why not start a little style section that explores how to stay fresh fashion-wise when you’re forcing a one and a half year old into his carseat.

With that (rather long) explanation, here’s our first installment of Mom Style! Woohoo!

Mom-Style1

I am actually not a maxi dress person. I’ve been told they look good on taller people, but I’m no shorty (around 5’8″) and I’ve always felt they made me look like an oompa loompa. Imagine my surprise when my good friend (and evil shopping enabler) Lane told me I absolutely had to buy this dress during a store opening party last year. I followed her advice and thank goodness, because this dress is amazing. It totally feels like you’re wearing pajamas, it’s so comfortable. And though it’s low cut, which is perfect for summer at the beach, but no so perfect for time with kids who tend to pull on your clothes at any given moment, you can just throw on a cute jean jacket and you’re ready to go!

Also, can I just say that this is a total homage to being a semi-horder. This jean jacket is from Target, circa 2002, and I refused, REFUSED, to throw it away. I knew someday it’d be back in style.

Along with the accessories listed above, I am also wearing some cute teal, criss cross sandals from the Gap and pretty tourquoise earrings, but as this was our first Mom Style photoshoot, we didn’t end up with any pictures of those particular items. It may have been due to my husband pretending he was a high fashion photographer and shooting everything he saw while telling me to work it. When I looked at the images he captured, there were approximately five of me, three of our trashcan lid, several of the ground and many of the back of Tate’s head.

Tate’s head? Yes…here’s an example.

This was the last image of me on the memory card. I imagine I will be framing this one for the husband, as I’m sure he spends a lot of time looking at this face.

Thanks for playing along everyone! Let me know what you think of Mom Style (and if you have a better name, I’m all ears) in the comments.

Working Mom Must-Haves

When Lulu was a baby and I went back to work, I (like everything else I did when Lu was a baby) had no clue what I was doing. I didn’t know where to look for resources or advice on how to balance having a career and motherhood, so I made up the rules as I went along. I suppose it worked out, but it definitely wasn’t easy.

This time around I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by an amazing group of working mothers who support each other and have made this whole surreal experience of motherhood a little less lonely. I’ve gained so many tips and tricks that have helped me in the transition back to work, and I wanted to share them here! Beware, I will mention the word breast. And maybe even boob. God help us all.

Work Wardrobe: I know, I know, you just had a baby, right? So money isn’t really flowing in (especially with all the doctor bills, new infant gear, diamond encrusted baby spoons, et cetera), but trust me, a few new wardrobe pieces are super important. First of all, your body is now different. Regardless of whether you’ve lost the baby weight, things just won’t fit the way they did before. Sorry, that’s life. Secondly, if you’re like me and you’re still nursing, you’re going to need some easy boob (ack, there it is!!!) access in order to pump during the day. And finally, it will make you feel better. You’re going to be sad to leave your little one at home, and getting all dressed up in some new digs will make you feel confident and happy. Yes, I know that’s vain. But it’s true.

I recommend just getting a few separates to spruce up what you already have. My new work purchases included a few cardigans, two new pairs of shoes (purely for fun), two new dresses (one that is button up and one that is a wrap…again for easy pumping access), and a couple of cute tanks/shirts. I didn’t spend much (mostly shopped at Target, sale rack at Nordstrom and Kohl’s) and felt way better about my return to the office. I’m lucky that my work is mostly business-casual attire, so I can pull off jeans on Fridays and don’t have to spend much to enhance what I already have on hand. Below are a few pieces that have inspired me so you can get an idea of what I’m talking about. Included with some work attire are a few fun pieces for weekend/summer wear as well.

Outfit Inspiration

Inspiration (clockwise) from Anthropologie, Target, H+M, Forever 21, Banana Republic, Urban Outfitters and J. Crew

[And look, I even was spotted on the street as super-stylish! Yes, my good friend runs that site, but whatever, I’ll take it! This outfit pictured is one of my new work purchases…note the separate pieces, great for pumping/nursing during the day.]

Online Shopping: And no, I’m not talking about clothes. You’re going to have to get those in-store to figure out what fits your post-baby body. But everything else? Hells yes!!! My schedule is totally full during the day, and now that Lucy is older our weekends tend to book up quickly as well. So when in the world am I supposed to go grocery shopping?

Here are a few sites I love and use weekly (if not more). They have totally saved my sanity.

Hy-Vee: Online grocery shopping in the Kansas City area. You just order and pay online, then you can either pick up your order at the store or have it delivered right to your house. Yes, a small fee is included. My time is worth the extra $10.
Diapers.com: This is where I get most of our baby gear, including diapers, wipes, toys, clothes, baby food, nursing supplies…the list goes on and on. I am also a big user of Soap.com, which provides pretty much anything you could find at a drug or beauty supply store. Shipping is free over $40 and orders usually arrive the day after they are placed. It is pretty much the best thing ever.
Hallmark.com and Amazon.com: With three siblings for both Trent and I, plus three sets of grandparents, two sets of great grandparents and six nieces/nephews, I am constantly running into stores to buy cards or little gifts for all of the occasions that require a little something-something. Now I can order a great card, personalize it with pictures or words, give an address and Hallmark will mail it for me. Awesome-sauce. Amazon is wonderful for gifts, and if you’re an Amazon Prime member, 2-day shipping is free. You know, if you forget until the last minute or something. Which I never do. Ever. Ahem.

– Good Nursing Bra: I know, I just said bra. Ew. But you’ll need one. A good one. Trust me, I didn’t spend the money on this the first time around, and really, really regretted it. My recommendation? Go to Nordstrom, get fitted by a lingerie specialist as your body and boobs (ahhh word bomb!) have changed and your size won’t be the same as it was before, and then if they don’t have your size in stock (hahahaha 34 DDD!) they can order it online and it’ll ship for free. Dunzo.

A Good Breastpump: Get a Medela…I have the Pump N’ Style in a backpack and it is awesome. It isn’t heavy, it’s easy to carry and it’s discrete. Which you need when you work in a office full of men. And be prepared to be asked if that is your lunch in the cooler or to have awkward encounters while cleaning the parts in your office kitchen. Guys can be dumb. But they mean well.

A couple of other accessories I’ve found useful are the quick clean wipes (so to avoid that whole kitchen cleaning fiasco), sanitizing steam bags (just pop in the microwave with some water and your pump parts are sanitized), and of those ridiculous looking bustier things that makes it easy to pump both sides at once (beware, boobs abound in this link!), which will save tons of time.

Smoothie Maker/Protein Powder: When Trent bought a fake magic bullet smoothie maker online I laughed and laughed and told him he was an idiot. I am the nicest wife ever. But this thing has been a life-saver for our crazy mornings that almost always end with me being late for work regardless of what I do. Since I’m still nursing, I have to eat like crazy to keep milk supply (ugh, sorry!) up, and adding protein to my smoothies has really helped. A banana, some plain Greek yogurt, a handful of frozen strawberries and blueberries, add in some orange juice and a splash of pomegranate juice and you’re good to go!

Smartphone: If you don’t have a Droid/iPhone/Blackberry, it’s time to invest. I keep everything from grocery lists, to nursing charts, to videos of the kids, to calendars on mine. I tend to spend a ton of time on the go, to client meetings, soccer games, daycare runs and wherever else I need to be, so having everything on hand and easy to manipulate is a must. And when I find myself having to nurse or change diapers in my car due to lack of time, the games and videos keep Lucy busy. Win, win.

Daycare Planning: Nothing is going to make leaving your baby with a childcare provider easy. Sorry, it’s just a sucky part of being a working mom. But trusting your daycare provider and being comfortable with your set up is so, so important. With Lucy, I just made a snap decision and spent months being freaked out and worried about her. With Tate, we decided early on that we needed a daycare that was reliable and almost always open, instead of a in-home daycare. We loved in-home care because of the specialized attention and low cost, but it wasn’t worth the headaches when the provider was sick or wanted vacation time or whatever, and we found ourselves scrambling to find last minute care. So we now do a full center during the school year, and then summers with a nanny. Not that much more expensive and gives me peace of mind. Best decision ever.

Some websites that might be helpful in your daycare search:

Daycare Connection: This is how we found Lucy’s daycare when she was a baby. It is for the Kansas side of the KC Metro area, and is free (though they ask for donations after a few free searches). All the daycares are state accredited/certified and they provide contacts for all types of care, including in-home, daycare centers and nannies.
Daycare Resource: Similar to Daycare Connection, but for Missouri. We didn’t have as much luck with this service, but we know others who have, so I wanted to list it for you Missourians.
Care.com: This is a nationwide service that, again, I haven’t used, but I’ve heard great things about. If you’ve used it, leave a note in the comments letting me know how your experience was.

A final tip: When it comes to childcare, try to start looking early, and if your first choice doesn’t work out, don’t freak too much if you want to switch. Lucy was in four different daycares during her first year (plus a few months) and she turned out just fine.

A Great Boss: I can’t find you this, but hopefully you’ll end up with someone who understands that a happy home life leads to a happy (and productive) work life. The more satisfied that you are managing this unfathomable balance, the more you’ll want to work your ass off to keep your job. I’m so lucky in this regard, and it makes being a working mom as easy as it can be.

Anyone else have any tips to share with the working moms of the world? I’m always looking for help/feedback, and trust me, we have to stick together!

Preggo Style – Day 5

It’s finally here, the very last day of Preggo Style! Don’t cry, people, because we’re going out with a bang. For this last look, we wanted to find something that would be perfect for a fancy night out, an anniversary dinner (ahem, husband…it’s in a few weeks, just a friendly reminder), holiday party or any other gathering that demands fancy shoes and red lipstick. As Katie very eloquently puts it, this Outfit = Night on the Town, Ooo La La, Like Whoa. Totally.

Day 5

From Katie, My Fashion Guru: The black dress. A must for any wardrobe whether you are 5 years old, pregnant or live in a cave. A woman simply cannot go 9 months without one. Things come up, holiday parties occur and tis the season is right around the corner. This dress was perfect, to say the least. The empire waist and A-line drape flatter Megan’s figure while showing off just-the-right-amount of skin. The neckline isn’t too intrusive but keeps the look sexy. I loved the satin ribbon that cinched the empire waist; blending different fabrics makes the look more dimensional, which I love.

From Megan: This dress was a hand-me-down from a former pregnant friend who thought I may be able to put it to good use. And all I can say is thank you to the zillionth power, because I love this dress! Along with everything Katie mentioned above, which makes the dress look so great, it is mind-blowingly comfortable. The fabric is smooth and stretchy (it’s a rayon/spandex mix), not at all itchy or restrictive, and is wonderful for those months when you really are fabric sensetive. The empire waist hits at just the right point above the belly and the top half is a perfect fit. I tend to find maternity items to either be way to much fabric on top or not nearly enough, so it’s rare to find one that covers up your goods, but also keeps you feeling sexy and pretty. The dress is Motherhood Maternity, and you can find a similar one on their website from the new Heidi Klum line. I find Motherhood to be hit or miss, but this dress is a total score.

Day 5

From Katie: I’ve sometimes struggled with the “what do I do now?” when wearing dressier garments out because a) they are usually sleeveless and b) it is usually below 40 degrees at night in the cooler months. So, finding what to wear that adds to the outfit is sometimes a head scratcher. The most obvious choice would be a wrap of some sort, but I think that is too easy and sometimes covers up your look without being a positive addition to it. To create a cohesive look that will flatter both the outfit and my body, I will usually look for a jacket. Did I mention I love jackets? Suit jackets are great because they are often tailored with princess seams on the bust and sides to make a more fitted look and they go along with the menswear looks that are so popular right now. This jacket, which Megan already owned, was perfect. The shorter body of the jacket hit her just right on the waist and I loved the peaked lapel, which helped dress up the look. If you can, look for a suit jacket that’s bit oversized for your evening looks. I loved this look by Stella McCartney (I realize this isn’t preggo-wear, but, visualize with me and I think the fit would work well with pregnant body types).

From Megan: Once we had decided on the dress, we scoured my closet looking for something to top off the look. This suit jacket by Old Navy was stuck in the back and I have no idea why I pulled it out. I think I’ve worn it twice ever, but Katie knew just what to do with it. I was skeptical at first, but now I know I must just listen to my fashion guru, because she was totally right. I bow down to your fashion wisdom, Katie.

Day 5 - Details

From Katie: What’s a better way to punch up an outfit’s energy than with a splash of color? You can do this with one element or several. I tend to do one and then have the other be a metallic – for example a metallic shoe with a bright colorful clutch or vice versa. I love the peep toe of Megan’s shoes, especially in the Fall – it just gives us girls an excuse to keep up those pedi’s! Another option for today’s looks could be a bootie, which might not be for some but I happen to love. Check out this blue Valentino bootie from 2009! The necklace added a fun geometric element to the soft, feminine look, and you know me by now – I love to mix it up. With Megan’s bright lip – which I wish I could pull off, but alas, never have been able to – we wanted her coiffe to be simple, so the fabric clip worked to add another splash of color that tied lip color and accessories color together.

From Megan: The accessories for this outfit had to be simple, but also make a statement. Being pregnant you already feel like everyone is staring at you, especially when you’re in more formal attire, so I wanted to play up the details with nice pops of color. I knew I wanted to do the purple shoes and clutch, both purchased at Nordstrom last year. The clutch is a random off brand (found in the sale bin for $15 WTF, right?!) and the shoes are Guess. They were a big purchase for a black tie wedding I attended last year, and they have worked out great ever since, as I’ve ended up getting quite a bit of wear out of them. You could pick any color, but purple was so hot last Fall, I ended up with these. I think a red, blue or yellow would be awesome (and unexpected too)! The necklace is from Express, as are the earrings, and they were both gifts from my sister. The hair clip is from J Crew, but I’m a huge fan of Etsy when it comes to hair accessories, because you can find such amazing and unique pieces for a great price.

All in all, this outfit cost me zero dollars in new pieces. The jacket, shoes and purse were all purchased by me way before Taco John was even an idea in my brain, and the gorgeous dress was recycled from a generous friend. Another instance of saving my booty some money, which I can now spend on insane nursery decorations, yay!

—————————————————–

Annnnnddddd that’s all folks! I can’t believe Preggo Style week is over. Our goal was to show you don’t have to buy a ton of new, expensive maternity gear to still be a sylin’ mama.

From Miss Katie: I’d like to thank Megan for allowing me to rummage in her closet for a day while we watched the Breakfast Club, eating way too many jelly beans in the process. It was so much fun to be a part of this project and I am making her promise me that we will do a Winter edition. (pretty pretty please with sugar on top!) I’ve missed being able to dress people and this was a welcome refresher! I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. Love ya Megs!

And From Me (Megan): I have to say thankyouthankyouthankyou to Katie for giving up a Sunday to come help me destroy my closet in the name of fashion. I was a little worried before we started, but I was so surprised at how many great combos we came up with, we could have done two weeks of Preggo Style! Who knows, a Winter edition could be on the way…..and thanks to everyone who indulged us in this weird idea. You guys are the best!

Preggo Style – Day 4

I can’t believe we are on Day 4 already! Only today and tomorrow, and then the Preggo Style Project will be over. Wah. To battle our collective sadness, let’s check out Day 4 and laugh over how I make the same bored face in almost every single photo. I am so cool and above it all, can’t you tell? This look was one we put together for a regular Saturday, and if you’re me, your Saturdays are spent running kiddos to dance class, birthday parties, shopping, and every once in a while, getting some quality time with your male counterpart. With that in mind, onward!

{click on photos to see at larger size}

Day 4

From Katie, My Stylish Obi Wan Kanobi: O – M – G this is probably the look I most relate to because I love (love!) jackets, boots and those new whatchamacallits… oh yea, jeggings. Megan in her uber-chicness owns a pair of jeggings, which due to my spending freeze I have not acquired yet, but I hear (and see) they are must haves for anyone. Looking through the assortment of tops and sweaters scattered on her bed, I knew I wanted to get her in a jacket. She has numerous jackets, all of which I love and some of which have been complimented by celebrities…she hasn’t mentioned this yet, has she? The tan jacket is a favorite because of the ruffle detail and the heathered camel color that will go with just about anything. The shirt we chose to go under the jacket works because the print spices up the look and the neck line does not compete with the ruffle of the jacket. No jacket? I would suggest a vest or cape in its place.

From Megan: Ah yes, jeggings. I fought against the evil “leggings as pants” craze for so long, when I heard the term “jeggings” I immediately wanted to vomit. But mid summer I got a very thoughtful Gap Maternity Gift Card in the mail from my in-laws, and when I went online to check out some options, I saw these. They looked so “Fall” and like they’d be adorable under boots or with pumps or even ballet flats. Plus, the fact that they are jeggings make them so much softer and more comfortable then skinny jeans…I was sold. This is really the only expensive purchase, clothing-wise, I’ve made the entire pregnancy, and it was totally worth it. These jeans are great for weekends, for casual Fridays at the office, date nights…pretty much anything. They have a “back panel” fit, so you can’t even tell they are maternity, and they also feature an adjustable waist-band, so you can make them larger as you get larger. As they were a new style this year, they were hard to find on sale or on eBay, but I bet once winter is over, they’ll pop up here and there for a cheaper price tag. The shirt is from Anthropologie, and I got it online for $20 last year (thanks to GGC who posted about it on her site). The bottom has a great flare detail, so it’s still (barely) fits, although I have a feeling it will soon have to be retired until Taco John arrives. The jacket is from J Crew, and is a constant for me during the Fall, especially for work. The boots are the same Born models that we featured on Day 1.

Day 4 - Details

From Katie: Meg’s a lover of big, bold, colorful purses (just like me… have you met my green “Michelle”?). Her yellow bag was a perfect complement to this denim look and the pleats and gathers reminded me of the of the Marni “Balloon” bag (with a much cheaper price tag). The look for her hair was a must needed messy chignon that she could just wrap and go, which makes 4 year old birthday parties and shopping much easier, wouldn’t you say? She owns a couple of curly-q swizzle sticks that make creating this look easy. Here’s a video explaining how to achieve this look, but I’m warning you, it kinda makes me cringe. Get to the point already lady! I do have to say that it was pretty helpful though. Go to the 1:58 mark and she starts telling you how to use these cool clips. Megan set the look off with a pair of aviators and simple, rose lip and she was ready to cruise.

From Megan: We went pretty simple with the accessories for this outfit, mostly because I felt like on a long weekend day, I wouldn’t rock too many pieces. If I was going to add anything to this look, it’d definitely be a quirky pair of earrings or maybe a big, gaudy cocktail ring. Instead, we chose to stick with simple, adding a pair of aviator sunglasses and one of my many giant suitcases purses. You mama’s out there know how much crap you have to cart around when you have kids, but I am not a huge fan of Winnie the Pooh diaper bags, so I tend to to buy giant, cheap purses and just use them until they are too gross and I have to throw them out. This one is from Target, but you can find similar pieces at any Old Navy, Forever 21, H&M, etc. The sunglasses are from the Banana Republic Factory Store (love the discounts…love!), and were slightly smushed during a roller-coaster incident last year. Eh, they still work, right? The hair was accomplished using the new Goody Spin Pins, which I discovered this summer and lived in during those humid Kansas months. They are a bit tricky at first, but once you get the technique down, they are an awesome alternative to a ponytail that doesn’t require too much maintenance.

And holy moley, everyone, that’s Day 4! I guess you could say this is the most expensive outfit we’ve featured so far, as the jeggings were purchased new and are about $70 retail. Granted, I paid for them with a gift card, so I consider them free…but whatever. Everything else featured is non-maternity and was already owned by me. Just shows you that one great purchase can make an entire outfit! Tomorrow is the last day of the Preggo Style Project, and we’re planning on going out with a fun evening look. I will even be sporting the red lipstick that makes me “look like the Joker, the latest one, the one that died.” You don’t want to miss it!
