Red or Blue?

UPDATED: Click here to see the winner!

Now for a totally vain and self-serving blog post. Because what is a blog (really!?) without a good amount of vanity? Nothing, I tell you, nothing!

I am attending a wedding tomorrow for one of my good high school friends AND I CAN’T DECIDE WHAT TO WEAR! ALL CAPS!!!! EXCLAMATION POINTS!

OK, I know this is not a very serious problem, but I need your help. Today my good buddy Mikayla came over to help me choose between these two beautiful Madewell dresses, and she was literally no help at all. Sorry Mikayla. So instead of listening to me list out all the pros and cons of each dress again, she offered to take some photos so I could ask you instead. Which one? Red or blue?

Wedding Dress Decision

A few notes:

– The wedding is tomorrow, and the forecast is rain, rain, rain
– The red dress is silk, and I’m afraid it’s going to get super wrinkly
– The blue dress is more structured, but looks sort of strange and bubbly from the side
– I love pockets in dresses
– I straightened my hair today for the first time in forever and it appears to be ombre-colored now….
– I almost fell over twice in those black heels
– We took these in front of my neighbor’s garage because finding good backgrounds in the suburbs is too hard, thanks neighbors!

Leave your vote in the comments (or over on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram…pick your poison). Please and thank you!

Decisions Are Hard : The Conclusion (Feat. Rivet & Sway)

A while ago I wrote this post about an amazing company called Rivet & Sway. Go ahead, you can go check it out if you need I refresher. I’ll wait.

………………..

If you just don’t have time to click back, here’s a quick rundown…Rivet & Sway is a rad company out of Seattle that makes gorgeous glasses for women. They cater to us crazy, busy ladies who love our frames to be stylish and on point, but don’t necessarily have bazillions of dollars to spend. Their sales model is awesome, you can browse their online catalog, and even get advice from a personal stylist, then they will send you three frames to try for free! Once you choose a pair, you just send them your prescription and your glasses are mailed right to your doorstep. It’s simple, convenient, and their selection is amazing!

rivet-and-sway

Rivet & Sway was kind enough to send me a few frames to try, which I posted here on the blog and all over my social media pages (Are you following me on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook? Well, you should be! I’m fun and only talk about teenage aliens some of the time…) asking for input on which ones I should choose. And you guys certainly had opinions! Here are a few comments I received:

“The blue ones! Go bold or go home!”

“I’m a sucker for Six Shooter since I wear them in copper, but I think the best everyday overall look for you is #2.”

“Get both 1 & 2!!”

“#3 (Hungry Heart) is great if you want a retro look. It’s very cute.”

After much hemming and hawing, I decided on….

rivet&sway final

Bachelorette Number 1!!! Also known as the Six Shooter in St. Tropez (Blue). I went back and forth on these, because I knew they probably weren’t the most versatile of the bunch, but I have so many pairs of glasses that look just like the other two selections, and I really wanted something fun. Sure, I won’t wear these every day, but they are a great accent piece, and I tend to treat them like a fun piece of jewelry. Jewelry that allows me to see! Hooray! (To see these suckers in action, you can go to this post which has a photo of me wearing them at a blogging event. Pretty fun, eh?)

If you’re looking for a great new pair of specs, check out Rivet & Sway, you won’t be disappointed! And can someone please PLEASE get the Punchline frames in Neapolitan? I am obsessed. (These are frame #2 above, just in a different color, and if you don’t buy them I will.)

This product was provided by Rivet and Sway, but all words and opinions are my own.

Working Mom Must-Haves

When Lulu was a baby and I went back to work, I (like everything else I did when Lu was a baby) had no clue what I was doing. I didn’t know where to look for resources or advice on how to balance having a career and motherhood, so I made up the rules as I went along. I suppose it worked out, but it definitely wasn’t easy.

The second time around I was lucky enough to be surrounded by an amazing group of working mothers who support each other and have made this whole surreal experience of motherhood a little less lonely. I’ve gained so many tips and tricks that have helped me in the transition back to work, and I wanted to share them here! Beware, I will mention the word breast. And maybe even boob. God help us all.

Work Wardrobe: I know, I know, you just had a baby, right? So money isn’t really flowing in (especially with all the doctor bills, new infant gear, diamond encrusted baby spoons, et cetera), but trust me, a few new wardrobe pieces are super important. First of all, your body is now different. Regardless of whether you’ve lost the baby weight, things just won’t fit the way they did before. Sorry, that’s life. Secondly, if you’re like me and you’re still nursing, you’re going to need some easy boob (ack, there it is!!!) access in order to pump during the day. And finally, it will make you feel better. You’re going to be sad to leave your little one at home, and getting all dressed up in some new digs will make you feel confident and happy. Yes, I know that’s vain. But it’s true.

I recommend just getting a few separates to spruce up what you already have. My new work purchases included a few cardigans, two new pairs of shoes (purely for fun), two new dresses (one that is button up and one that is a wrap…again for easy pumping access), and a couple of cute tanks/shirts. I didn’t spend much (mostly shopped at Target, sale rack at Nordstrom and Kohl’s) and felt way better about my return to the office. I’m lucky that my work is mostly business-casual attire, so I can pull off jeans on Fridays and don’t have to spend much to enhance what I already have on hand. Below are a few pieces that have inspired me so you can get an idea of what I’m talking about. Included with some work attire are a few fun pieces for weekend/summer wear as well.

Outfit Inspiration

Inspiration (clockwise) from Anthropologie, Target, H+M, Forever 21, Banana Republic, Urban Outfitters and J. Crew

[And look, I even was spotted on the street as super-stylish! Yes, my good friend runs that site, but whatever, I’ll take it! This outfit pictured is one of my new work purchases…note the separate pieces, great for pumping/nursing during the day.]

Online Shopping: And no, I’m not talking about clothes. You’re going to have to get those in-store to figure out what fits your post-baby body. But everything else? Hells yes!!! My schedule is totally full during the day, and now that Lucy is older our weekends tend to book up quickly as well. So when in the world am I supposed to go grocery shopping?

Here are a few sites I love and use weekly (if not more). They have totally saved my sanity.

Hy-Vee: Online grocery shopping in the Kansas City area. You just order and pay online, then you can either pick up your order at the store or have it delivered right to your house. Yes, a small fee is included. My time is worth the extra $10.
Diapers.com: This is where I get most of our baby gear, including diapers, wipes, toys, clothes, baby food, nursing supplies…the list goes on and on. I am also a big user of Soap.com, which provides pretty much anything you could find at a drug or beauty supply store. Shipping is free over $40 and orders usually arrive the day after they are placed. It is pretty much the best thing ever.
Hallmark.com and Amazon.com: With three siblings for both Trent and I, plus three sets of grandparents, two sets of great grandparents and six nieces/nephews, I am constantly running into stores to buy cards or little gifts for all of the occasions that require a little something-something. Now I can order a great card, personalize it with pictures or words, give an address and Hallmark will mail it for me. Awesome-sauce. Amazon is wonderful for gifts, and if you’re an Amazon Prime member, 2-day shipping is free. You know, if you forget until the last minute or something. Which I never do. Ever. Ahem.

– Good Nursing Bra: I know, I just said bra. Ew. But you’ll need one. A good one. Trust me, I didn’t spend the money on this the first time around, and really, really regretted it. My recommendation? Go to Nordstrom, get fitted by a lingerie specialist as your body and boobs (ahhh word bomb!) have changed and your size won’t be the same as it was before, and then if they don’t have your size in stock (hahahaha 34 DDD!) they can order it online and it’ll ship for free. Dunzo.

A Good Breastpump: Get a Medela…I have the Pump N’ Style in a backpack and it is awesome. It isn’t heavy, it’s easy to carry and it’s discrete. Which you need when you work in a office full of men. And be prepared to be asked if that is your lunch in the cooler or to have awkward encounters while cleaning the parts in your office kitchen. Guys can be dumb. But they mean well.

A couple of other accessories I’ve found useful are the quick clean wipes (so to avoid that whole kitchen cleaning fiasco), sanitizing steam bags (just pop in the microwave with some water and your pump parts are sanitized), and of those ridiculous looking bustier things that makes it easy to pump both sides at once (beware, boobs abound in this link!), which will save tons of time.

Smoothie Maker/Protein Powder: When Trent bought a fake magic bullet smoothie maker online I laughed and laughed and told him he was an idiot. I am the nicest wife ever. But this thing has been a life-saver for our crazy mornings that almost always end with me being late for work regardless of what I do. Since I’m still nursing, I have to eat like crazy to keep milk supply (ugh, sorry!) up, and adding protein to my smoothies has really helped. A banana, some plain Greek yogurt, a handful of frozen strawberries and blueberries, add in some orange juice and a splash of pomegranate juice and you’re good to go!

Smartphone: If you don’t have a Droid/iPhone/Blackberry, it’s time to invest. I keep everything from grocery lists, to nursing charts, to videos of the kids, to calendars on mine. I tend to spend a ton of time on the go, to client meetings, soccer games, daycare runs and wherever else I need to be, so having everything on hand and easy to manipulate is a must. And when I find myself having to nurse or change diapers in my car due to lack of time, the games and videos keep Lucy busy. Win, win.

Daycare Planning: Nothing is going to make leaving your baby with a childcare provider easy. Sorry, it’s just a sucky part of being a working mom. But trusting your daycare provider and being comfortable with your set up is so, so important. With Lucy, I just made a snap decision and spent months being freaked out and worried about her. With Tate, we decided early on that we needed a daycare that was reliable and almost always open, instead of a in-home daycare. We loved in-home care because of the specialized attention and low cost, but it wasn’t worth the headaches when the provider was sick or wanted vacation time or whatever, and we found ourselves scrambling to find last minute care. So we now do a full center during the school year, and then summers with a nanny. Not that much more expensive and gives me peace of mind. Best decision ever.

Some websites that might be helpful in your daycare search:

Daycare Connection: This is how we found Lucy’s daycare when she was a baby. It is for the Kansas side of the KC Metro area, and is free (though they ask for donations after a few free searches). All the daycares are state accredited/certified and they provide contacts for all types of care, including in-home, daycare centers and nannies.
Daycare Resource: Similar to Daycare Connection, but for Missouri. We didn’t have as much luck with this service, but we know others who have, so I wanted to list it for you Missourians.
Care.com: This is a nationwide service that, again, I haven’t used, but I’ve heard great things about. If you’ve used it, leave a note in the comments letting me know how your experience was.

A final tip: When it comes to childcare, try to start looking early, and if your first choice doesn’t work out, don’t freak too much if you want to switch. Lucy was in four different daycares during her first year (plus a few months) and she turned out just fine.

A Great Boss: I can’t find you this, but hopefully you’ll end up with someone who understands that a happy home life leads to a happy (and productive) work life. The more satisfied that you are managing this unfathomable balance, the more you’ll want to work your ass off to keep your job. I’m so lucky in this regard, and it makes being a working mom as easy as it can be.

Anyone else have any tips to share with the working moms of the world? I’m always looking for help/feedback, and trust me, we have to stick together!

Decisions Are Hard

I love wearing glasses. I mean, I think I’ve talked about my love for my glasses about a million times (you can read one instance here) and that love isn’t going anywhere. People keep asking me when I’m going to get my eyes “fixed” and I have to say…I don’t think I will! At least, not now. My glasses are such part of my identity and style, I think I’d feel naked without them.

But just like any good wardrobe staple, my glasses need a little freshening up now and then. I haven’t bought a pair in two years, so I was due for another set of specs. I have slowly moved from thin, wire-rimmed to big, bold choices, but I don’t usually have the budget for designer frames. Even though I love getting input at the eye doctor or other specialty shops, their selections aren’t usually what I have in mind. Enter the amazing company, Rivet and Sway!

I love Rivet and Sway because their frames are super stylish AND they have a personal stylist on hand to help you pick out your favorites. Here’s how it works:

1. Go to Rivet and Sway online
2. Check out their awesome selection of styles
3. Create an account, enter your face shape and upload a picture (if possible…highly recommended)
4. Ritzy, the Rivet and Sway personal stylist, will email you with three sets of frames she recommends based on the info you entered (This is great, because you can email her back and forth with questions, send her photos, and she’ll even Skype with you! So rad!)
5. Rivet and Sway will send you three frames for free (either the ones Ritzy picked or others you like) to try for a few days. Take photos and upload them to social media where they will check you out and let you know their thoughts. Email Ritzy for more advice. Whatever you please!
6. Send the test frames back (shipping both ways is free as well) and then get back on Rivet and Sway online to order your faves.

So cool, right? I was super pumped when Rivet and Sway contacted me to try out some of their specs, since I was looking to add some pop to my current collection of heavy black and brown frames. These are the three Ritzy thought would look best on me…what do you think?!

rivet-and-sway

1. Six Shooter in St. Tropez – Okay, disclaimer…I LOVE THESE! I totally wore them all day long to see if I could pull of the blue color and I think in the end I decided I didn’t care what others thought of them because they are amazing. But they could be too much, huh? Trent didn’t hate them, which is rare for him (quote: “I like them more than when you wear red lipstick…”). Lu loves them because blue is her current favorite color and she squealed when she saw me in them at school pick up.

Oh @rivetandsway, I think I love you! So fun finding these new specs on my doorstep today!

(Me, in the school pick up line…yes, I really wore them all day…)

2. Faster Pussycat in Crocodile – These are a slimmer version of the cat-eye frame, and I really like them. They were Trent’s favorites of the three I ordered. I like them, but they are quite a bit like what I already have.

3. Punchline in Moss Landing – These are a great version of the “geek glasses” that are super popular right now. They are more refined than what I’m wearing these days (see my current frames here) and would definitely be better for a professional setting. They’d probably also be more versatile.

Alrighty, now it’s time for you to weigh in! Trent, Lu and I have all picked our favorites (Tate had no opinion because none of the options featured Thomas the Train), but I want to know what you think. Should I go for the bold blue, the slim cat-eye or geek chic? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Thanks in advance and I promise to check back in with the ones I choose!

High Maintenance

So, packing for Alt Summit can be a bit daunting (sidenote: Sorry, I promise this is the last Alt-related post this week! And it’s a funny one!). I was stressed for a few weeks trying to decide what outfits to bring, how I’d do my hair and what shoes would go with what. Basically I was like a 14-year-old heading off to her first co-ed overnight camp. But not. That’s how I was acting. “Ahhh, will they like me? I have to look perfect! Are they going to think I’m a dork? Am I not hipster enough? AHHHHH!”

Up until the morning I left, I was listing out my options and trying to pack the perfect bag. When I left for the airport, I was pretty damn proud of myself. I packed outfits I was comfortable in and felt like “me.” I had packed way to many shoes, but I was okay with it. I was feeling chic as I stepped on to the plane in my dinner outfit (I didn’t have much time after my plane landed to get to my dinner with the team from Citizens of Humanity, so I wore that outfit during my travel day) of jeans, a striped mini-dress, and ankle boots. I went to my dinner, had a nice time, and felt fairly awesome. Someone even mentioned they couldn’t believe I was 30. Let’s just say I was pretty darn stoked.

And then….

I got back to the house where we were staying and opened my bag to get out my bathroom kit so I could brush my teeth…and lo and behold, no bathroom kit. I’d left my massive kit hanging in my bathroom at home, never to make the flight to Salt Lake. I had arrived in town with a few things in my carry on (thank god for my tight schedule and thinking I’d need a few things on hand) like make-up, a small travel size hairspray and a brush. But that was it.

Please see Exhibit A, the aforementioned bathroom kit, as I found it when I returned home…just as I’d left it.

alt-bathroom-kit

Now, I don’t consider myself high maintenance in most instances. My beauty routine on a daily basis is pretty minimal, but it varies. My make up is usually simple, just a bit of tinted moisturizer, concealer, mascara, cream blush and lip gloss, and I’m good to go! It usually takes about five minutes total. But the hair. Oh dear lord, the hair. I have a long, thick (but also fine) main of wavy hair that is a beast to style. My saving grace has been dry shampoo, which extends my hair for up to four days between shampoos, as shampooing daily actually makes my hair greasy and flat. If I want to wear it straight, I need several products to get it there (styling lotion, glossing creme and/or smoothing oil, a round brush and hair dryer) and I need several totally different products to wear it wavy (styling tonic, curl creme, mousse and a hair dryer with a diffuser attachment). If I want to wear it up in a bun or any sort of braid I need dry shampoo and hair spray. So, let’s see…that’s ten different items. TEN! Just for my hair! Blergh!

I knew I wanted to have options at Alt, so I packed all of my hair products (plus shampoo and conditioner) for the trip. Well, I packed them in the kit and then left them behind. Not to mention other essentials like a toothbrush, deodorant, hair ties, hair pins, face wash, toothpaste…and on and on and on.

When I realized my mistake, I prepared for a self-inflicted freak out. But it never came. Maybe I was so stressed by Alt itself my brain couldn’t take anymore and just said “screw it.” No idea. But I borrowed some toothpaste, face wash and deodorant from Nicole, who also happened to have some shampoo and conditioner samples in her bag. I bought a toothbrush at the hotel gift shop. And I made it work. I attempted to blow dry my hair straight each day (as that takes less time and is easier to do without products than any of the other options), but I was definitely a bit of a grease ball.

IMG_5259
Me, on Day 2 of the conference, looking a little greasy and flat…Nicole looking totally gorgeous…darn you Nicole!

And you know what? It was okay! I survived and maybe even learned something. I don’t need a million products and I don’t need to be perfect. I doubt anyone there was super disturbed by my lack of fancy hair (although I was looking longingly at some of the other girls with fab hairdos), in fact, I’m almost positive no one noticed. And my suitcase had so much extra room, I was able to bring home some fun surprises I picked up for the family in the hotel toy store!

I guess the moral of this dumb story is don’t over think things too much. And if you run into trouble, just buy a bunch of toys and you’ll feel much better about it!
