What happens when you plan a fun, simple picnic at the park to celebrate a two-year-old’s birthday? It rains, duh. And what was supposed to be a small, fun get together turns into a loud, crowded insame asylum. How did this happen? Well, I only invited Lu’s godparents (the famous Heath and ‘Kayla – as Lu calls her) and my sister plus her family. At a park, three seven-year-olds is not a lot. In a teeny, tiny cottage….? Well, it’s a bit overkill. But we still had a fun time, I drank wine and boo-hoo’d a bit over the rain, but no one else seemed to care. Except for Heath, who after viewing the carnage that is four kids in a small space has mentioned rethinking the amount of children he’s like to have. Poor guy looked like he’d been hit over the head with a sledgehammer.
Below are the pics from the “party” and you can also view them here.
What? You want MORE pictures? Really? We’ve been kind of image heavy around here lately….but OK. If you insist.
Two weeks ago Trent, Lu and I headed to NYC for my school bud Theresa’s wedding. People have been asking politely rudely texting me for photos ever since. Unfortunately we didn’t get a ton of great pictures since we spent most of our time carrying strollers down subway stairs and preventing our child from being run over by a cab, but we did take a few here and there.
All I wanted was one picture with the bride…but when Trent told us to “work it” we couldn’t hold back. Fierce.
Theresa knew she could count on her most pale of friends to provide the sunblock for the beautifully sunny day in NYC.
Lucy got a white balloon from Theresa’s mother and refused to put it down. Even as we jumped from the subway to NJ transit, looking like huge doofs, the darn kid refused to let go of that balloon. Or the other three she collected. We looked like a travelling circus.
We also spent a good amount of time visiting with family in New Jersey. During this trip I mastered the Garden State Parkway in a flashy, bright blue, Dodge vehicle AND spent under $100 at IKEA. I’m so proud.
This is Lucy’s first major boyfriend, Jack. Jack is the son of (get ready for this) Trent’s brother’s girlfriend’s sister. So technically, they aren’t related. We spent hours trying to get them to sit nicely next to each other and pose, but Lucy was more interested in Jack’s toys then Jack himself.
This is Jack’s baby sister, Grace. Lucy was a bit obsessed with Grace and spent most of her time at their house making sure that “baby OK?” Grace was so sweet and cuddly it made me want to jump my husband and make babies AT THAT VERY MOMENT. And every time Trent looked at me hording her he would roll his eyes and run away in fear.
This is Trent and his brother Scott. They are both hairy. And have unhealthy obsessions with board games.

Every time I go to NYC, I leave wishing I could put a downpayment on a small, ridiculously expensive apartment and move there within the week. But a few weeks ago I was at the in-laws’ farm and got to watch the sunset over the pond whilst typing away on the back deck. And on that day, all I wanted to do was move to the country. So I guess that makes me a very indecisive person, and partially explains why I am never the one in charge of making large decisions regarding our family living situation. I’d pack everyone up and two weeks later mention how I miss the humid air of Kansas honeysuckle and Trent would slap me upside the head.
This past weekend I was finally able to meet the gorgeous Carson James Young. And holy crap, is that little guy the cutest baby on the planet! It was such a cool experience, seeing my friends Abbie and Luke tackle the role of parenthood. Trent and I just kept looking at each other like, yup, I remember that. And that. Oh, and that too. Caring for a newborn should be an Olympic sport, it’s so difficult, but so far Luke and Abbie seem to be taking everything in stride. Unlike a certain blond mother I know who spent the first few weeks of her daughter’s life crying and wondering how in the world someone could allow her to take home this baby from the hospital without a proper license. (Sidenote: Is that the biggest sentence fragment you’ve ever seen? Yeah, me too.)
In between begging Trent for another baby and plotting how I could fit little Carson into my suitcase to take him home with me, I did manage to get a few photos. Unfortunately, wonderful borrowed lenses don’t help too much when you have the crappiest flash on planet Earth, but I still tried to make the best of it. Overexposure is the name of the game, people!

My mother’s day weekend was OK. Not good, merely fine. We spent the weekend at the farm and even got to spend a good amount of time with my dad. My daughter was wonderful, although she had no idea what day it was. My husband didn’t forget about the day AND bought me a gift. I was able to have a nice dinner with Lu’s grandmother and some other family members. And I finally got to meet gorgeous baby Carson, which was so fun. I swear, seeing your big, bearded husband cuddling with a seven pound baby is enough to make your uterus explode!
Unfortunately there was a good amount of sadness as well. I won’t get into all the details here, but let’s just say the weekend ended with tears for several different reasons. If you check out my Twitter feed, you can see some of the more trivial reasons. The serious ones were a bit much to be Twittering about.
Thursday, before I set off on my weekend excursion, I drug my daughter and poor, innocent, hungover Mikayla all around KC to take some two-year-old photos of Lu. I really wanted to show the urban, lively part of the city, so even after we move to the horrid suburbs, Lu can look back and know she was once a city kid. Some of my favorites are embedded below, and there is a slideshow at the bottom of this post. You can view the entire set of photos here.
This one is my favorite. I LOVE the colors and the whole mood of the photo. Classic Lucy. Taken on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri.
This is another personal favorite, although I’m sure not everyone will like it. I really like the motion within the photo and the skyline of Kansas City in the background. Seems very urban, but sweet at the same time. Taken at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri.
This is the photo that will go to the grandparents. Sweet, a little grungy, but full of sugar. Taken on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri.
Check out the entire set below. Seriously, do it. There are a ton of good shots and I think it shows what a beautiful city we live in. Oh, and the model was pretty cute as well.
