Through the Looking Glass

Best Fwends (Diana F+)

Kansas (Diana F+)

Sunset (Diana F+)

Trent (Diana F+)

Downtown Council Grove (Diana F+)

All photos taken with my new Diana F+ camera. Still getting the hang of shooting with a plastic camera and 120 film (hello overexposure, how are you!), but enjoying the challenge. Also loving the surprise of finding film you haven’t yet developed, sending it off and getting that big envelope with your prints in the mail. I think I’ve gotten so used to digital shooting, and always seeing what you’ve captured instantaneously, I forgot how fun it is to shoot something and have no idea what you’ve captured on film. The whole point of using a Diana (or a similar camera, like the Holga) is that the beauty is in the imperfections. The light that creeps into shots, random lens flare, they are what make the photos so unique and lovely.

Or at least that’s what I’m telling myself, since almost all of my shots include a nice red flare streak. It’s totally supposed to look like that!

Photoblast: Destin, Florida

For your viewing pleasure, the rest of the photos from our amazing surprise vacation to Destin. You may note there are several photos of Abbie, Luke and Lucy going nuts on a reverse bungy trampoline. You then may wonder why there are no pictures of Trent or I.

We were over the weight limit. And they wouldn’t let us on.

Wah, wah, waaaaahhhh.

Just what someone who’s about to parade around a beach in her swimsuit loves to hear. “You’re too heavy for this, ma’am.”

I would have never guessed either

It’s been six months since my friend Theresa and I started our project NYC + KC, and I want to see a show of hands of those people that never thought we’d make it this far? Okay, put your hands down. Really, put them down. If you would have asked me how long this thing would’ve lasted, I would have told you a month, tops, but here we are, 181 days later, and still going strong.

Granted, we have fudged some of the rules a bit. No longer does each picture have to be taken before noon (a year of mornings…yeah, wasn’t going to happen), and some weeks we get pretty behind in uploading. Really, the only rule is that we take a photo each day, and even if it doesn’t get posted for a week, it still counts. I think giving ourselves this kind of stretching room has helped the project to continue. Our goal is to make it through an entire year, and while it isn’t easy, I think we just might make it.

For those of you that find themselves forgetting to click on the icons on the left sidebar, which lead you to the project, here are a few of my favorites:

Day One Hundred and Three

To me, this looks like they could be at the same party, laughing at the same joke.

Day One Hundred and Seven

Is Lulu watching the carriages?

Day One Hundred and Ten

A city scene, and a country scene.

Day One Hundred and Thirty Eight

A color celebration.

Day One Hundred and Thirty Nine

Can I borrow some change?

Day One Hundred and Fifty

Rain and sunshine.

Truly, you should check out the archives. There are rainbows and weddings and flowers and kids and babies and cityscapes and dancing and food and everything else you could ever imagine.

Even my dad, the Dean, has checked it out. His exact words:

Very cool, and an interesting concept! I like it. In some pairings, you’d almost think that you two have switched sides, but it reclarifies in the next pairing. I’ll have to monitor it periodically ‘til its done (if I remember where I put the linkage).

So you should check it out. The Dean says so. That is, if you remember where you’ve put the “linkage.”

“Firsts” or “Why Did You Bring a Rifle to the Wedding?”

This past weekend I was able to do so many fun things, my head is still spinning. The fun was so overwhelming, in fact, I actually haven’t been able to sleep. For reals. It’s 4:22 a.m. and I’m still not asleep. This will not end well.

But as long as I’m not sleeping, I figured I’d share some of the fun with you all, you lovely Crazybananas readers, you. First, on Friday, I got to finally meet Miss Lauren Kathrine Fogarty, the new baby girl just birthed by the awesome Kristi. I definitely didn’t get enough time with the munchkin (Lu fell while playing with the neighbor kids and never really recovered from the trauma of it all), but there were major snuggles to be had.

Baby Lauren

Out of focus, but I love it anyway.

Kristi + Lauren

Kristi is a great mom already. Such fun stuff!

Lauren's Foot

Um, yeah, I know. Right? Right?!! Arggghhh, BABIES! Overwhelming adorable-ness!!!!

That made no sense, did it? Well, like I said, NO SLEEP, so nothing I say in this post will make much sense.

But I digress.

On Saturday, I headed to good ole’ Manhattan, Kansas for a lovely July wedding. My best bud, Abbie, has a brother-in-law that was getting hitched, and she asked me if I’d take pictures of the wedding. Now, as I AM NOT a professional (or even f’ing close) photographer, I bitched and moaned and begged not to do it, but in the end, I decided I wanted to help out. And I’m glad I did, as it was a fun learning experience for all involved.

What did I learn? Well, when the bride looks like this, the photographer doesn’t have to do much.

Just Married

The Men

Rice! (or birdseed)

What else did I learn? Well, sometimes, at weddings in Kansas, boys like to have their picture taken with their guns. I find this odd, but I tried to go wtih the flow.

Boys with Guns

And then I ran for cover….

Abbie + Luke

Special thanks to Luke and Abbie, who trusted me (for some strange reason) to capture Sascha and Michaela’s big day. You guys are pretty. Now move home from Alabama, immediately!

Americana – Part 1

I’ve been procrastinating to the nth degree on processing and uploading photos from our Fourth of July at the farm, mostly because I still have a gazillion photos to go through, and you really need to see the ones of Trent, his mom, Lucy and Molly McGoo stuck on a paddle boat in the middle of the pond (HI-LARIOUS!). But as the husband has decided to take apart his computer again and I currently have no access to the hard drive where my photos are stored, this will have to do.

These shots include the first night at the farm where I aimlessly took pictures of every flower or plant in sight, hanging out with the fam in downtown Manhattan, the 4th of July carnival in Wamego, Kansas and a playdate with my friend Inger and her family, who were visiting from Maryland. Enjoy!

  • Part 2 will include explosions, a very muddy family, several rides on the Gator and blurry photos of a giant vat of sangria. Don’t let the anticipation overwhelm you!
