City Mouse in the Country

IMG_0444

I’d be the first one to tell you I know diddly squat about agriculture. I’m from Kansas, I should know better, but I have never lived in a rural area or had to make my living off of the land like so many in my state do. I learned so much from my long weekend in western Kansas, things like how the drought affected crops, how science is changing how we grow things and how a dead corn stalk can slice open your hand when you’re pretending it’s a sword (thank Lucy for that one…ouch!). I’m still no expert on any of these things, but it was endlessly fascinating to hear how a real, working farm affects our lives without us even realizing it. I was so impressed by everyone I met and talked to, and as the daughter of a scientist, I was intrigued to hear how farmers are using science and technology every day…maybe even more than I use in my daily life in the city. Crazy.

Thanks to the Coberly Farm for hosting us! You can like them over on Facebook, where they post videos of harvest and other happenings. Here are a few more images from our trip. You can view more here or here, or check out the entire set on Flickr.

The iPhone Panoramic Camera

OK, no, I was not lucky enough to be the recipient of an iPhone 5. But as the very proud owner of an iPhone 4S, I was more than a little excited about the bells and whistles that came with the software upgrade (iOS 6) that we all automatically get when a new model comes out. So far, my most used tool is the new panoramic lens function. This ad should spell it all out for you:

I really started playing with the panoramic functions this weekend at the farm, and it was pretty spectacular. Here are a few examples…

As you can see the images vary in size depending on how much of a scene I was trying to capture, but I think the effects are pretty freaking amazing, especially considering they were shot with my cell phone! I mean, really? The future is such a weird place. But I’m liking it!

Gove

IMG_0711

I spent the last four days in Gove, Kansas at my sister-in-law’s amazing family farm (you might remember when she got married earlier this year). The place was amazing and we had the most lovely time. I was in dire need of a family lovefest, and that’s indeed what I got! We just got back last night after a long car ride home, so instead of a real post today, I decided to put up some images of our trip. I have about a million more, so this may be a multi-part series this week. Lucky you!

Happy Weekend!

Happy-Weekend

Hey, hey, it’s Friday! This week has flown by, mostly because I took today off from work and our entire family is in Gove, Kansas. Yes, the middle of nowhere. I am so pumped to spend some real time with people who love me and my family. Good stuff. So with that, I’m off to ride a tractor. Here are some posts from all around the web for you to enjoy over the weekend:

I think Winston Churchill and I would get along.

Are you totally annoyed by your significant other’s habits? (OMG, if Trent mentions one more time that I don’t close doors tight enough while he steps over his laundry and dishes that are all over the floor I will scream!) This post will have you rethinking some things…

Unbeknownst to either of us, Trent and I both listen to the Nerdist podcast. This week’s was with Tom Hanks and it was awesome in every sense of the word. And when I tweeted about it, Chris Hardwick tweeted me back, so I’m feeling pretty special right about now.

This canoe elopement is so beautiful! A plaid wedding dress? Um, yes please.

Lisa Frank totally predicted the future.

The “Make Someone Happy” series at Oh Joy! is still super fun. And now, with cupcakes!

These photos of the “Another Place” statue installation in England are incredible.

A good and wise friend sent me this video earlier in the week and it totally resonated. What would you do if money wasn’t an object?

I’m doing the October photo a day challenge on Instagram, and one of my images was chosen as the best of that day! So exciting!

Happy Weekend!

happy weekend 10-5

Yay, it’s Friday! I swear, my weeks drag on and on, but at the same time, I feel like it’s always weekend wrap-up time. I blame Doctor Who. Anyway, this week was was heads and tails better than last week, and I have so many people to thank for that. Mainly, my number one, two and three support system, those goons who live with me. Without Trent, Lu and Tater, this week would’ve been pretty craptastic. And an extra special thanks goes out to my friend Mara, who has been at my house twice in the last week, at least one time because she was called as I was sobbing at an American Girl Store. People, that is a real friend. Get yo’self one. (But you can’t have mine, she’s taken.) There are so many more people that have lifted me out of my damp, dark land of grumples this week (my sister, my co-workers, my dog) and I owe you all a shot of tequila and a cupcake. I promise, my debt will be paid.

And of course, thank you to you. Yes, YOU! If you’ve read anything here this week, left a supportive comment, or liked a post on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, then you’ve made my days a little brighter. And for that, you are awesome. I am sending you virtual cupcakes and tequila.

Now for this week’s roundup of fantastic links from around the world wide web:

– This Etsy shop specializes in gifts for the special nerd in your life. “Winter is Coming” candles, Butterbeer scented handwash and Sonic Screwdriver lip balm. I know where I’m getting my stocking stuffers this year!

-The first photos of the Arrested Development cast are out! This is happening!

– 10 hilarious and usual celebrity impersonations that no one else does. (via AB Chao)

– Oh, hey, it’s Rebecca Woolf…perfectly summing it all up. Again. Damn, she’s amazing. If you’re a mom, you should be reading this.

Fashion + Stanley Kubrick = Awesomesauce (Also, totally creepy. Perfect for Halloween.)

– I totally saw the Harlem Globetrotters in third grade. Sounds like nothing’s changed.

– I love Karen Walrond. An excerpt:

So I’ve decided that instead of automatically complaining about how busy I am, I’m going to think about my response a bit. Perhaps it would be more accurate to respond, “my life is full.” Besides, it puts me in the right frame of mind: it’s a lot easier to tackle whatever challenges I have in front of me, if I think of them as being there as a natural part of living a full life, you know?

– I have lived in Kansas much of my life, and I have to admit, I really don’t get to scared of tornadoes anymore. But FIRE TORNADOES. TORNADOES OF FIRE! Oh, hell to the no.

– Someone please hire this guy, he needs to work in advertising.

– A great piece on how online ads based on click through’s are the worst model in the history of ever. During TV ads, most of us either fast forward or get up to pee…but they still cost a ton. What gives?

– I’ve been saying this for years. Moms of earth, get in the photo! It isn’t about how hot you look, it’s about being a part of the story.

– Incredibly happy stingrays! Also, a cat and dog cuddle puddle!

– A classic robot costume for kids. (This whole costume series is rad.)

– Finally, worlds collide. Two of my favorite things…Instagram and chocolate!
