Pink or Blue

When I was pregnant with Lucy I was absoultely, positively sure I was having a boy. I had never even fathomed having a girl. I wasn’t girlie, in fact, as a kid I was made fun of because I was so boyish. I specifically remember getting laughed off the school bus because I said I wanted to be a boy so I could play in the NBA. I was cursed from that moment on. Well, until I grew some boobs, that is. After that, most people forgot about the whole “wanting to be a boy” thing.

I was so afraid I wouldn’t know what to do with a girl. That she’d hate me, as all daughters hate their mothers at one point or another, and that she’d be a total daddy’s girl. That she’d have my screwed up teeth and un-tanned skin and would blame all of her insecurities on me. Turns out, she does have my smile and my skin, and I’ve never seen such a beautiful baby. Having this little girl, and seeing myself reflected in her, has made me see myself much more clearly. Because if something on her is beautiful, and that something came from me, well, it must be beautiful on me as well.

Today one of my best friends in the world is finding out if she’ll be buying pink or blue bedding for her nursery. She is absolutely sure it is a boy, but I’ve warned her not to get too excited either way. No matter what, she will adore this little thing, who will probably walk and talk and look like her. And she’ll see herself in a whole new light. As they say, nothing is more beautiful than a happy mother.

A Good Reason

It’s Friday, people! So, to celebrate the end of this trying week, I thought I’d get my behind into gear and finally (FINALLY!) post a new Lu-video. I’ve used the excuse that I couldn’t find my video battery charger for way to long, so this week we spent some time trying to catch snippets of the personality I talk about so much on this site. It’s hard to catch any of it on tape, given that the minute she sees our video camera circa 1998, she runs over and spends 20 minutes trying to rip the lens cap off of it’s holder. Which may explain some of the shaky videography. Or not. Anywho, here’s my little monkey doing her thing including running around frantically, saying her three favorite words (doggie, duck and bubbles, respectively), and dancing in her PJs.

Getting Over the Hump / Gotta Love Flickr

I know, it’s Space Camp Thursday, and yes, I do have enough pictures to get us through 2007, so it’ll be back, but today I just don’t feel like searching and scanning and trying to justify my dork-ness.

I’ve been thinking about how crabby I’ve been lately and I think that much of it is driven by the fact that I haven’t had time to get out and take pictures lately. Although my photo skills leave much to be desired, when I have a chance to get out and get creative, it takes my stress level way down and makes me a better person to be around. And I smile more. Which is sometimes a negative, considering my snaggletooth, but I digress.

So this morning I spent some time surfing around Flickr looking for some inspiration. It’s incredible what 10 minutes of photo searching can do for your mood. Here’s my unsolicited advertisement for Flickr; it’s most awesome. I love how people all over the world are taking pictures of their daily lives, and how these pictures can inspire others a world away. So, for your creative pleasure, follow these easy steps and be inspired!

Step 1 – Go to Flickr.com, scroll down and click Explore on the homepage.

Step 2 – On the Explore page, go to the drop down menu that says Choose a Month, and, well, choose a month (I chose October 2007 because I’m very unique and creative).

Step 3 – You’ll end up at a page that looks like this:

Flickr Interesting

Click on a day of the month and go through choosing pictures you find insanely good. Be inspired. Be happy. Sing to your dog. Hug a stranger. Smile at the mailman.

Announcing…

Grace

Grace Ryan Munson, new sister to Jack, daughter of Wendy and Ryan, niece of Erin and Scott (better known as E. and Scooter), and future horrible New Jersey driver. Congratulations, you guys!

Also, for good measure, here’s brother Jack, the first in line to marry Lucy (there are many others, she’s a bit of a player, but Jack was the first to call dibs).

Jack

I know. You’re dying from cuteness, right? Me too.

Jack, if you’re reading (which I doubt since you’re not even 2 yet), Lucy has now learned how to growl, jump off furniture, beat things with sticks and run around screaming wildly. I think you’d have much in common. Call me.

Best Birthday Gift Ever

I know I’ve already posted today, but I just received the best birthday present ever. My good friend, Theresa, gave me a $25 gift certificate to Kiva, a non-profit that loans money to entrepeneurs in the developing world. I ended up donating to a 25-year-old woman in Africa named Lilian, who has started a pharmacy to help her community and is also taking care of her entire family as her mother died 2 years ago. The wonderful thing about Kiva is that when the person you donated to pays off their loan, you get the money back to either keep or redonate to someone else. If anyone needs a gift idea, a gift certificate from Kiva is a wonderful idea. It, by far, was one of the best gifts I’ve received in years.

Update: In the last 10 minutes since I donated my $25 to Lilian she raised the full amount she needed for her business.
