My iPod is Not Lame – Part Deux

I know you’re all expecting it. Dreading it, perhaps. Knowing that in the past weekend there have been not one, but three airings of the tween hit, High School Musical 2. “What the heck will Megan have to say about this one?” you may be wondering. Or you may just want me to shut the hell up about all of this stuff. You wouldn’t be the only one, trust me.

Before I give a quick rundown of what I thought of the premiere, I just wanted to leave a little disclaimer about all of the crappy entertainment I’ve been writing about lately. I’m sure it’s fairly obvious I’m a 13-year-old kid stuck in the body of an almost 25-year-old working mom. I know it’s dorky. And if I didn’t, there are plenty of people in the last month or so that have driven that point home.

It’s just that I spend each and every day working my butt off. Up at 5 (on a normal day) and working for 9 hours, then picking up Lucy and making dinner and being a mom. Then cleaning up after the husband, the baby, the dog, or whoever else feels like they should leave dishes in my sink and old banana peels and eggshells on my counter. And, sometimes, I just really don’t want to do it anymore. Any of it. It’s too much responsiblity and too stressful. Being a primary caregiver for another person plus bringing in all of the family’s income plus trying to have a life of my own is pretty much impossible, and I feel my whole body start to implode and I just need to do something that makes me smile, but also requires absolutely no brain power.

This may be why I’ve been spending some of my free time reading books written for kids or watching crappy reality TV or patiently waiting [read: obsessing] for some stupid TV movie made for 10-year-old girls. I get that I could probably be spending my time reading War and Peace or watching the new French film that won at Cannes or reading the newspaper. But I can’t. I just can’t. I listen to NPR during my drive to and from work, and that’s about all of the real, horrible world I can deal with an a daily basis.

And really, if watching a bunch of teenagers sing some catchy pop tunes about being yourself and sticking up for your friends and knowing that in two hours everything will end happily ever after makes me feel better about all of the stress in my life, then, seriously, what’s so bad about that?

High School Musical 2

As for the movie, the music and dancing was much, MUCH improved from the original. The self-tanner was a little frightening and my poor little Zac Efron was given a very unfortunate solo dance sequence, which made him look like one half a total freak and one half complete eff-tard. In general, it was a sweet, badly lip-synced, summer chick (very young chick) flick. Even if the watching the movie makes you want to jump off the side of a building, you may enjoy the soundtrack, which has lots of pop songs, mixed with some swing music and showtuney tracks. Which I’ve now added to the list of strange music on my iPod. Bet the whole office will be clamoring to borrow it now!

For any of you who actually are interested, click here to listen to some tracks from the movie. They really are quite cute and catchy. I know at least one of your who ownes a copy of the movie Crossroads starring Britney Spears, don’t make me out you, and I promise, this is no worse than that. I recommend tracks 3, 4 and 6.

She makes me happy

I’ve been grumpling around way too much for the past few days, so to turn it all around, here is a new video of Lucy Lu in all of her 13-month-but-really-almost-14-month glory. Too bad I can’t watch because You Tube’s blocked at work.

I’m not grumpling! I swear, I’m not!

Updated: Vimeo is the most awesome of all new internet applications. Why?! Because it’s not blocked at my office! Yipee!

Oh, and in more randomness, after I made this Simpson’s avatar for The Mara’s birthday, I was told it looked NOTHING like her and why did I put a picture of a deer on her shirt. Ummm, it’s Santa’s Little Helper, HELLO!

Anyway, because apparently even though I have bitten off way to much than I can chew in most areas of my life right now, I can still find the time to make Simpson’s avatars for everyone I know. So, let me introduce the Peters-Simpsons.

Simpsons Peters

My mother-in-law is right, I have too much time on my hands.

The Mara Gets a Little Older

Tomorrow my faithful reader The Mara turns 24-years-old. In honor of this big birthday, I thought I’d write a little poem, lymric you might say, to accompany some images of dear, sweet The Mara.

At the Moro House
When we met, we were young and dumb,
partying through the night.

Old School
You always had the cutest haircuts,
your hair even used to be light.

St. Pattys
We’d go out in Manhattan all of the time,
especially on holidays.

Green Beer
We’d drink so much, get sick sometimes,
laughing all the way.

Licking
Your tongue, my dear, is so very long,
you love to stick it out.

Christmas 2006
When we get famous I’ll sell these pictures to E!
you will probably scream and shout.

Mara and Lucy
You a great Auntie to my little one,
even though you were scared she’d be hairy.

Mara and Baby Lucy
She loves you to death, laughs when she sees you,
even though you can sometimes be scary.

Mara Simpson
Happy birthday to you, you live in a zoo,
you look like a monkey and you smell like one too.

The. End.

The One Where Dork is a Four Letter Word

The arrival

So, how do I feel about the ending of Harry Potter? Obviously, it’s sad. I’ve had a few conversations with other Potter fanatics who’ve expressed their own critiques of the final (maybe) book in the series. Here are some of my random thoughts:

SPOILERS BELOW!!! IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE BOOK, QUICKLY SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! Unless, of course, you’re Trent or another non-Potter fan that just wants all of this Harry Potter stuff to be over, already.

Point 1 (Seriously, this is about to be a spoiler so don’t read unless you’ve finished the book. And don’t be mad at me if you haven’t and this spoils you.): Snape (big surprise) isn’t evil!

I guessed this one as soon as I read Book 6. You just had to know that Dumbledore isn’t an idiot and had some grander plan that no one knew about. The extent to which Snape was good, though, was a surprise to me. He was just a poor guy who lost the girl and spent the rest of his life trying to make up for it.

Point 2: Ron and Hermione / Harry and Ginny

Um, duh, of course they were going to get together. I’m glad JK left out all of the gory details, but gave us just enough to know what was going on between them.

Point 3: All the freaking deaths!

I do have to admit I really didn’t cry while reading this book as I had when past characters have died in Books 5 and 6. There was just so much death, it really didn’t shock me into tears like the others did. I was glad JK didn’t kill off MAJOR characters (Ron, Harry, Hermione, Ginny), but I was still sad about poor Fred Weasley. And Tonks and Lupin right after they had their baby. And Mad-Eye. And Dobby! That was the one that almost brought me to tears…poor Dobby.

Point 4: The Necklace / The Lord of the Rings

I did feel like some of the themes and ideas in this book were taken from other fantasy books. For example, the necklace that held the Horcrux seemed extremely similar to the Ring of Power in the Lord of the Rings series. The way it affected everyone that wore it and how it caused Harry and Ron to act. How they all had to take turns wearing it and carrying the burden. Still a good theme, but I would’ve liked something a bit different here, more original.

Point 5: Is it really over?

I’m not sure, but I don’t think so. Harry’s story might be over, but the introduction of his kids, Ron and Hermione’s kids, Teddy Lupin and Victorie Weasley at the end give me hope of more. I’m thinking it may be like the CS Lewis series, where the characters grow up and their children continue the story in the same imaginary world. JK ended vaguely, so who knows what will happen.

OK, SPOILERS ARE OVER. YOU CAN CONTINUE READING NOW. IF YOU STILL WANT TO, THAT IS. I’M SURE MANY OF YOU HAVE STOPPED READING DUE TO ALL OF THIS HARRY POTTER STUFF. WHY AM I STILL TYPING IN CAPS?

Whew, that’s better. Anyway, to end all of the Potter-mania (at least until the next movie) here are some random links I’ve found in the past week or so pertaining to the HP series. Enjoy!

Harry Potter Recipes: Finally, I can make my own Butterbeer.

Want to talk about the book, but all of your co-workers keep making fun of you? Listen to Mugglecast, a Harry Potter podcast where they discuss the events/themes in Book 7 (this site contains spoilers, so don’t listen if you haven’t read the book).

Hermione Granger: Feminist Role Model A great article about how Hermione raised the bar for girls in kids’ books.

Thanks for listening (reading, whatever) to all of my Harry Potter ramblings for the past week. I promise, no more of this stuff for a while. I will keep my dorkiness reserved for things like Space Camp pictures and stories about my dog. And hopefully now Trent will stop whispering “I’m Voldemort” into the baby monitor when I’m trying to sleep.

Out ’til Monday

Yeah, so I’m gonna be a bit busy this weekend. I have lots of errands and events and there is this book coming out I think I may read. Maybe, you know, if I have the time. Whatever.

OMIGOD HARRY POTTER IS COMING OUT THIS WEEKEND AND I’M SO ‘EFFING EXCITED I CANNOT FREAKING WAIT!!!!!!!!

But, you know, we’ll see. If I have time. No big deal or anything.

Maybe I’ll make myself a wand in all of my spare time. Because I’m totally not freaking out about this book. At all. Seriously. I am waaaayyy calm. Definitely calm enough to make some crafts.
