Staycation: Spring Break Edition

This week is spring break in our neck of the woods, and it’s our first real experience with the idea as parents. I mean sure, we both had our fun down in South Padre Island back in the day (ahem…), but since I work full time, both of our kids are daycare kids. And daycare kids don’t really do spring break. This year Lu is in kindergarten, so she is realizing for the first time what “winter break” and “fall break” and “spring break” (yes, they really do have that many breaks) mean. Unfortunately for my delicate flower, we don’t have the vacation time or funds to do a trip this year, so she’s spending spring break at her old daycare center with her little brother. Luckily, Lu is pretty resilient/ridiculously happy about everything, and so far has loved being back at her old stomping grounds. She’s a bit of a celebrity, and I have a feeling she’s loving being the “big kid” for once.

But today I decided since my entire office is gone on spring break trips with their families, we deserved a little fun too! So I surprised Lucy at daycare around noon and we had a mini-spring-break-staycation. We went to the pool (at our gym…indoors, still fun!), got ice cream, saw a movie (in our basement, since Lu hates big theaters), and ended the day with a picnic and playdate at our local park. She was thrilled and totally felt like she had a real spring break. I’m dreading the day when she realizes a vacation actually includes leaving your neighborhood…but until then, we’re enjoying what we have right here.

Carpe diem, you know?

Weekend Roundup

Week 1ish

Yes, I know, it’s Tuesday…but better late than never, right?

Some things we did this weekend:

Went to my first KC antique mall with Lulu and got some awesome art and a yellow dish to hold jewelry on my bedside table.

Trips for macaroons, to the big toy store and a fancy ladies lunch at Urban Table.

Tate chased everything that moved. Sometimes he carried a big stick. Sometimes he fell down. There were tears (and laughter too).

Trent and I saw Radiohead and lost our minds. We also ate an entire bag of Twizzlers before the show started, proving how hard core and awesome we are.

Hope your weekend (and week) were just as fun!

Here and There

anniversarytxt

Can you believe it’s Friday? Yeah, me neither. Between my anniversary date and taking two days off this week (not to mention Tate getting ANOTHER fever and me having to work from home since he was quarantined from daycare) I can’t remember which way is up. The picture above is from our anniversary date, wherein we somehow broke in to our old apartment building on the Plaza and convinced a current tenant to let us on the roof. We finally busted open a bottle of wine we’d been saving since our wedding and toasted each other in the rain. Truth be told, about 10 minutes later the romance was gone and we were itching for a nice, warm, dry movie theater, but I’m still glad we did it. It’s crazy to see how far we’ve come in 10 years. Here’s to love!

Other Things That Are Making Me Smile This Week:

Jordan’s list of ten things to do in Paris with kids is so wonderful, it’s making it difficult to stop searching travel sites for cheap flights. Le sigh.

I missed the Oscars due to what we’re calling Picklegate 2012 (I ate a bad pickle…and I got very, disgustingly ill), but reading the Fug Girls live tweets from the show more than made up for it:

We’ve decided that Jonah Hill still has the weird Nazi-slick hair because he wants Captain Von Trapp to glare at him sternly, maybe sneak in a punch, and then sing Edelweiss.

Yes, this is a rap about Downton Abbey…and it’s pretty good! (via Vulture)

This is one of those songs that makes you happy and sad all at once.

I am so obsessed with Shoemint! Everything sells out so quickly, it’s hard to get a pair (RIP, Jolly), but I finally broke down and ordered the Rosemary last week. I am not so patiently waiting for them to arrive.

I want hair chalk. I shall have it.

You’re My Sweetheart

(The above version is via Maggie, but I originally heard this song on the CW because I’m 13 years old and love the CW…and even though I have been told by my Valentine that my CW watching is “all that is wrong with the world” somehow he’s decided to stick around. The world is a strange place.)

I hope you all eat lots of chocolate and drink buckets of wine today, and remember how much you are loved. Especially by me. Thanks for being there, all. Mwah!

Big Ideas and Time Wasters

HELLO INTERNET! AM I SHOUTING?!

Oh, I am. Sorry.

I know, I am the worst blogger in the history blogging, excepting anyone on MySpace circa 2002. I want to write here. My brain is filled with ideas and stories and fun, but the problem with BIG IDEAS is they take some time to come to fruition. So there is this awkward in between time where people are milling around with their hands in their pockets just waiting for things to come together…and that’s about where I am right now.

Also, I’ve had too much Diet Dr. Pepper. Wheeee!

So, until I can tell you fun things about my big ideas, here are a few things going on around the Internet that are making me giggle today:

10 Ways the New Mad Men Poster Could’ve Been Less Offensive

– This is what Bon Jovi would sound like if it was covered by Bon Iver.

– Oh Mizzou, never change.

– The Chuck series finale was last Friday (sob!). Here is a great article on how the show changed TV, and particularly the role of the fan.

Shit Dowager Countesses Say is the best of this meme that I’m almost totally over. Well, and this one too (I miss my modem…).

Harry Potter themed TOMS? Yeah, I’d rock that.

– My style-themed Pinterest board is so ridiculous. Could I have more glasses or brunette envy? Ugh, so obvious!
