Instagrammers to Follow

Instagram-Header

I think it goes without saying that I love Instagram. I mean, I guess it could go without saying, but since I say it every week, I think it’s fairly obvious. I love Instagram for a lot of reasons, the most important of which is I feel Instagram is like Twitter was a few years back. In terms of my real life loves, it gives me quick and poignant glances into their daily lives. Many of my best friends live pretty far away, so seeing these little images, whether it’s a shot of their lunch or their kids or their sunset, makes me feel just a little bit closer.

But there is a whole other section of people I follow on Instagram, those I’ve never met in real life (and for all intensive purposes, probably never will), those whose shots pull me in and cause me to catch my breath. Sometimes they are simple and sometimes they are grand, but they almost always inspire me to do better. So, in no particular order, here are five people you totally should be following on Instagram:

Instagram_RMarshall

Ryan Marshall was the mind behind the brilliant blog Pacing the Panic Room, which I loved and read for many years before he shut it down this summer. Ryan is a professional photographer and videographer, but his Instagram feed mostly covers his life with his wife, daughter and step-son. This summer Ryan did a #warriorsofsummer series, and the entire thing was breathtaking. I love how he makes his supposedly ordinary life look magical.

Instagram_GGC

I’ve talked about Rebecca Woolf on this blog before, regarding her incredible blog Girls Gone Child. She just joined Instagram in the past few months, and since then, my feed has definitely been a happier place. Rebecca is a mom of four based in L.A., and her photos make me think I could totally handle two more kids (sidenote: I totally couldn’t). Her photos manage to take a life so full, I’m sure, of chaos and craziness, and show a simple calmness. The best thing she does is photograph the relationships between her children. Watching a family grow into themselves is pretty fantastic.

Instagram_DLF

Bri Emery is the mastermind behind the amazing blog Design Love Fest, and co-creator of Blogshop. Her Instagram follows her throughout her life’s journey, from client meetings to photoshoots to dinners out with her boyfriend to concerts in L.A. (where she is based). She is obviously a fan of color and bold type, which she takes care to share with everyone in her images. I think I have a major girlcrush here.

Instagram_Jaredchambers

Jared Chambers is someone I mainly started following because Ryan Marshall mentioned him and I’m so, so glad I did. He is the creator of the hashtag #smallpeoplebigplaces, a series in which he takes photos of people in massive circumstances. His work is mainly based on the west coast, which is my happy place, so I crave his images of seaside fog and gigantic rock formations. He is a true artist of Instagram, whose images are solely created on the iPhone (which is rare these days on Instagram), and is an absolute must follow.

Instagram_Bleubird

James from Bleubird is someone I’ve mentioned here a few times for her incredibly inspiring blog, and if you’re not following her on Instagram, you’re missing out. Her feed is full of her beautifully simple life in Texas. She homeschools her two older children, and watching them on their journey has completely changed my mind about what homeschooling can be. Her photos convey a sweetness and a great love for her family, which always make my day.

Happy Weekend!

Untitled

Happy Friday, everybody! Today is a fairly gloomy one here in Kansas City, and my Friday is honestly off to a rough start. I’m hoping there is nowhere to go from here, but up. Right? Right. OK, then. Trent and I are pretty excited for the long weekend, because my in-laws will be taking BOTH KIDS for TWO DAYS! I just may nap, watch movies and eat Taco Bell all weekend long.

Here are some fun links from around the www this week:

– Loved this post from Fat Mum Slim about getting over your fears after you take a big professional leap. I’m heading slowly (oh so slowly) in that direction and the worry can just eat you up.

– I heard this remix of Mr. Rogers a few weeks ago, but the other day a story on NPR reminded me of it. The person who remixed it was hired by PBS, and people were a bit afraid his creation would be disrespectful to Mr. Rogers’ memory or it would seem silly. Instead he ended up making a really moving piece. I highly recommend watching it. (Also, have you seen the video of Mr. Rogers testifying before congress in 1969 about public television for children and government funding? It will give you chills.)

– Lane’s getting all crafty these days, and she made the cutest tie dye napkins. Now all she needs to do is throw a hippie themed dinner party. Get on it, Lane!

– Trent and I have been having some major discussions regarding Lulu’s schooling and what we need to do to make sure she gets the best education possible. I swear, I’ve had more than a handful of conversations lately about homeschooling (not with Trent, mostly with other working moms) and while I know it probably would never work for us, James over at Bleubird has me inspired and a bit envious.

– Let’s invent some artisan bread!

– Ramsey’s blog always has the best tech tips, and this one on the free app Songza is on point. It’s like Pandora, but instead of picking an artist you like, you pick a mood. Like, music for a Friday night with friends or music for sleeping in on Sundays. So smart!

– Some rogue artists in Latvia went out to the cotton fields, harvested a crap ton of cotton, then threw it off a roof in a big city to make it look like it was snowing. The reactions from surprised people in the streets are so fun.

– MSN and Buick teamed up to make this awesome set of short videos featuring Kansas City as shown by some creative and fun people who live here. So many hidden local gems and they make our city shine. Nice job, people!

Happy Weekend!

happy weekend

Happy Friday, everybody! I hope your week has been awesome and full of fun things (#onefunthing). It’s a big weekend around here, tomorrow is Lucy’s first soccer game of the season. And for once, she’s actually nervous. It breaks my heart a little bit to watch her fret over how well she’ll play. Hopefully her nerves will settle after she gets on the field.

Here are some fun links to get you through your weekend:

– A video montage of all the impressions/accents Leslie Knope does in Parks & Recreation. I’ve said it a million times, Amy Poehler is a genius.

– I’m a horrible cook and don’t really love most cooking blogs (they make me sad I’m such a bad cook), but I’m so digging Bon Appetempt and her videos. Here they use all the coins her grandma sends her in the mail to make a dinner.

– The Glow features moms from all over the design world, and the photos are always beautiful. This feature on Leilani Bishop makes me think I should probably move to Hawaii. Probably.

– OK, that’s it! Too many people are doing awesome dinner en blanc parties…I demand one in KC! And also, I’d like an invite, please.

This is what happens when a squid listens to Cypress Hill.

– This interview with Jessica King, a Wisconsin state senator, was so refreshing. I’m so over polarizing politics, and I hope more politicians like her get into office this year.

– An invisible bicycle helmet?! People are so smart.

– This online recipe for ice cubes had me laugh/snorting in my office. The comments are the best part. (via Whoorl)

Here and There

anniversarytxt

Can you believe it’s Friday? Yeah, me neither. Between my anniversary date and taking two days off this week (not to mention Tate getting ANOTHER fever and me having to work from home since he was quarantined from daycare) I can’t remember which way is up. The picture above is from our anniversary date, wherein we somehow broke in to our old apartment building on the Plaza and convinced a current tenant to let us on the roof. We finally busted open a bottle of wine we’d been saving since our wedding and toasted each other in the rain. Truth be told, about 10 minutes later the romance was gone and we were itching for a nice, warm, dry movie theater, but I’m still glad we did it. It’s crazy to see how far we’ve come in 10 years. Here’s to love!

Other Things That Are Making Me Smile This Week:

Jordan’s list of ten things to do in Paris with kids is so wonderful, it’s making it difficult to stop searching travel sites for cheap flights. Le sigh.

I missed the Oscars due to what we’re calling Picklegate 2012 (I ate a bad pickle…and I got very, disgustingly ill), but reading the Fug Girls live tweets from the show more than made up for it:

We’ve decided that Jonah Hill still has the weird Nazi-slick hair because he wants Captain Von Trapp to glare at him sternly, maybe sneak in a punch, and then sing Edelweiss.

Yes, this is a rap about Downton Abbey…and it’s pretty good! (via Vulture)

This is one of those songs that makes you happy and sad all at once.

I am so obsessed with Shoemint! Everything sells out so quickly, it’s hard to get a pair (RIP, Jolly), but I finally broke down and ordered the Rosemary last week. I am not so patiently waiting for them to arrive.

I want hair chalk. I shall have it.

My lovely friend (and former NYC + KC partner in crime) Theresa was interviewed by the Associated Press for an article on composting in Brooklyn. So far, the story has been picked up by several outlets, including Yahoo! and the Seattle Times. You can find more photos here or read the article here.

Congrats, T!
