Teen Dance Photo Session : Sloan

I was so honored and grateful to be asked to photograph the beautiful and talented Sloan! Sloan is a gorgeous dancer, and wanted to do a dance photo session that had an urban vibe. A few years ago we did a fun dance session on the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum, but this time around we wanted to do something a little different. We headed to one of my favorite parts of Kansas City, the Crossroads District (home of tons of amazing galleries, artists, designers and studios), and the resulting images combine her beauty and our city’s grit in order to create a series that is simply magic!

Sloan is a dancer with Jody Phillips Dance Company and also is a member of the national Tremaine Performance Company. Full disclosure, she also happens to be my niece and I’m crazy proud of her! How someone related to me (the clumsiest person in the universe) ended up so graceful is beyond me! She is so fun to watch, and there is nothing more fulfilling than witnessing someone doing something they love.

Sunflower Fields Kansas City Photographer

Sunflower Fields Forever

There is a little spot in the Kansas City area that is completely breathtaking for a few weeks in the late summer and early fall. This amazing sunflower field west of the city blooms every year for about two weeks, and provides gorgeous views that evoke everything I love about living in Kansas. It’s picture perfect, and I knew we had to see it for ourselves!

Now, I’m not gonna lie…the kids were a little underwhelmed with the whole idea of driving out to a field in the middle of nowhere. At this point, they are used to my crazy antics, so they don’t ask too many questions, but after a long day of school and activities, they were more excited to get home to their toys and games than to frolic around in a sunflower field. But as soon as we pulled up, their jaws dropped and their eyes brightened.

They ran through the sunflowers together, playing hide and seek with a few other kids who they found deep within the field. I found myself yelling for them to stay close…the sunflowers were almost taller than me, and I kept losing them within the green stalks. Tate would pop out from behind me, yelling “I’m right here mama, ‘es okay!” I heard Lulu giggle as she attempted to hide, shaking the flowers above her head, giving away her precious secret spot.

As I snapped away at the endless rows of yellow, Tate asked to borrow my phone so he could take some photos of his own. When I was finished, Lucy climbed up on the step ladder I had brought along, and framed her scene. It was so amazing watching them mimic my mannerisms, leaning down, looking for different angles, biting their lips as they shot image after image. Sometimes I forget they are watching when I’m working…I don’t remember that the things I do will be burned in their memories forever. They may not remember exact details, but they will bite their lip as they shoot an image, and that comes from me. They may grimace when I ask them if I can shoot some photos of them, but they smile and squeal with glee when I let them shoot images of me. They can tell I love what I do, and it’s such a privilege for me to get to show them what passion, drive and hard work looks like.

Senior Session : Brandon

Senior sessions are becoming some of my favorites! There is something really incredible about meeting and working with kids that are almost grown-ups. While it feels like with every generation, adults start complaining about the youth (those kids today!), I am in awe of the teenagers and young people I get to work with. They are inspiring, intelligent, talented and full of hope for their futures. It’s an honor to get to document them at this transitional and celebratory time in their lives!

Brandon is an incredible young man, who will be graduating from Blue Valley High School in the Spring of 2016. He’s an Eagle Scout, who works within his community to make the Kansas City area a better place. He’s also an extremely talented musician! Brandon plays the violin, and is just beginning his second year playing with the Kansas City Youth Symphony.

On the day of our session, Brandon accomplished a milestone for any teen….he passed his driver’s test and received his driver’s license! Of course, we had to grab a few photos with his car to celebrate. I’m so honored to work with awesome kids, like Brandon, and their families. Thanks Brandon, and lots of luck for an incredible senior year!

Headshots : Lane of Dotted Line Marketing

These days it’s not just movie stars who are in need of a good headshot…in business, it’s become just as important! We are marketing and sharing online more and more, and while that cute selfie might work fine for your personal Facebook page, you need to showcase yourself in a more professional light for your business ventures. Odds are if you are successful, you are marketing yourself and your business online via social media. You might also be speaking at conferences or writing for industry outlets. If you provide your audience with an unprofessional headshot, it makes YOU look unprofessional and cheap. That’s not the best message to send to potential clients!

What is the first thing you do when you schedule a meeting with someone you haven’t met in person? I know I immediately Google them to see what I can learn before we meet. Because of this, many times my “first impression” of people is what I see online. It’s important that what they see reflects my business and my philosophy.

I get so excited when small business owners and professionals contact me to take professional headshots. I know that they value their clients, and their business will be growing in big ways! I was super pumped when Lane Odle of Dotted Line Marketing contacted me to get some new headshots done for her business. Lane is also a blogger, and while she has a ton of great images of herself on her blog, she knew she wanted something a bit more polished and professional for her business ventures. We shot down in the City Market area of downtown Kansas City, and I love how these images turned out!
