Vacation Photo Tips and Tricks

Tips + Tricks for Great Vacation Photos

I can hardly believe it’s already almost spring…and for many of us that means SPRING BREAK! It also marks the beginning of travel season for lots of families. Whether you are taking off for some fantastic locale or hanging out close to home for a “staycation,” capturing moments in photos is important to all of us. I get asked all the time how we come home with such awesome images (and video) from our family trips, so I wanted to share some of my favorite tips to ensure you will enjoy your vacation memories for years to come!

Check Your Gear
Now, you don’t need to spend a million dollars on gear to get great images, but I wanted to give you a little breakdown of what we use when we travel. Keep in mind, RARELY do we take all of this gear at once, but instead we tend to grab one or two things depending on what type of travel (airplane versus road trip), who is coming (kids or no kids?) and the location (family farm versus faraway beach).

Smart Phone Vacation Photos

  1. Smart Phone – The best type of camera is the one you have with you….this means it doesn’t matter what you have on hand, as long as you have SOMETHING to capture the moment. Often our cell phones have great cameras, and since we carry them everywhere, they can be the best option to capture a moment as it happens. Learn your camera settings and look into downloading some apps to edit your images and make them pop. My current favorite apps are VSCO Cam (for iPhone and Android) and A Color Story (for iPhone and coming soon for Android). These simple apps can really take your images to the next level and are very easy to use.Vacation Images DSLR
  2. DSLR – As a photographer, it’s hard for me to go anywhere without my DSLR camera! The images captured on my DSLR are far superior to anything I could get with my cell phone, and it’s capabilities allow me to take photos in situations that would be impossible with a point and shoot camera. Some examples would be in darker locations, quick motion images and macro detailed images. However, there has been more than one occasion where I lugged my DSLR on a trip and never even took it out of the hotel room, because it’s bulky to carry around or I didn’t want something to happen to it. So you have to weigh whether it’s worth it to bring this beast along.2016-03-06_0002
  3. Fuji x30 ($399) – One solution I had to my DSLR problem was to purchase the Fuji x30. When Trent and I went on our honeymoon in St. Lucia last year, I knew I would want to take beautiful images, but I didn’t think I’d use my DLSR enough to warrant dragging it along with me. The Fuji was a perfect compromise! It’s compact, and technically a point and shoot (you can’t switch out lenses like with a DSLR), but you can control the settings in the same way you can with a DSLR, giving you the option to get some amazing images and HD video as well. It also has settings that replicate Fuji film AND it has wifi capabilities, which makes sharing your images on social media super easy.Underwater Photos
  4. GoPro ($200) – A few months ago my husband bought a GoPro Hero 4 Session, and while we haven’t traveled with it yet, we are definitely looking forward to it!  It’s water resistant for up to 10 meters, so it’s perfect for beach vacations. It’s also pretty indestructible, which makes it awesome with little kids. It can capture video and photos, and since it’s so compact, it’s very easy to travel with. We can’t wait to use it this Spring Break.
  5. Diana F+ or Disposable Cameras for the Kids – Sometimes handing off your expensive camera to your little ones can be a bit scary…so we tend to skip this all together and buy disposable cameras for the kids. You can get an underwater disposable camera for around $6.00, and the kids can carry them with them during the whole trip. The best part is when you take the film to get developed and they get to see what they captured! It’s always a great surprise! We also have an old school Diana F+ ($39.99) which we often bring and give to the kids to take images. This old plastic camera produces dreamy, radiant, and lo-fi images, which are so gorgeous and are often my favorites.

Be a Documentarian…an Observer

It’s tempting to gather our families up in a big group and command everyone to say “CHEESE!” but you’re way more likely to get amazing images if you take a slightly different approach. Instead of creating scenarios to photograph, be a fly on the wall. Some of my favorite photos of my family is when I stayed back and let them do their thing, instead of telling them what to do.

Look for Different Perspectives

Get down low, shoot from above, shoot behind the action…these are are simple changes you can make to enhance your images to tell the story of your family. When you look for different angles and perspectives, you are creating the puzzle pieces of your own story. This also makes it easier to put together an album of your trip, without having the same five images repeated over and over again.

Get in the Photo

As a mom and a photographer, this is something I really struggle with…many times I will have tons of gorgeous images of my family, but I’m not in any of them! It’s as if I wasn’t on the trip at all. It’s important to remember to include yourself in the frame, because you want your kids to look back at these images and remember that you were a part of it too, not just the face behind the camera. Set up a tripod and a self timer, invest in a remote for your camera, ask your spouse or a family member to snap an image of all of you, or even take a selfie! Just don’t forget to include yourself! Display and Enjoy Your Images

One of the worst things we all do is take 100 images on vacation, post a few to social media, save the rest on our computers, and then never look at them again. Don’t forget to find ways to display the images and memories around your home! The point of taking photos is to enjoy them, admire them, and remember happy times with friends and family. Hang up images on your walls, get albums or photo books printed (I love Blurb.com for family photo books). If you take videos, edit them together using something simple like iMovie so you can watch them, instead of just dumping the files on to your hard drive. You took the time and effort to capture these memories, make sure you enjoy them!

Spring Hair Trends with Posh KC

Are you guys read for spring yet? I am so, so excited for warmer temperatures, flowers popping up all over the place and the idea of getting to be outside a bit more. But I’m also super pumped for flip flops, skirts and NO MORE STATIC HAIR! Anyone else have this issue? My hair is naturally wavy, so in the summer it’s a total dream. The Midwest humidity plus a few select hair products and I have mermaid beach hair without much effort. In the colder months, it’s a different story! The dryness in the air makes me look like I constantly am touching a live wire. I have Albert Einstein hair, and it’s not pretty.

But with spring I start to remember that I actually do love my hair and don’t want to cut it all off! Cute styles and flirty waves go perfectly with my spring wardrobe. While I adore the idea of spring hair, I sometimes don’t know where to start, so I’m glad Posh KC is here to help me out! Posh KC is a blow dry bar located in the Power & Light District of downtown Kansas City. I love Posh KC, because as a busy mom and business owner, it’s pretty wonderful to spend an hour getting your hair (and makeup too!) done. My blowouts tend to last for a few days, so it ends up being a real time saver for me! Plus, who doesn’t love treating yourself to some pampering? A few weeks ago, I photographed some spring trends with the amazing Posh KC stylists (full tutorials to come on their site!), and they were perfectly fresh for the season.

Small Business Branding Photo Session : C4 Styling

C4 Stying : Image Branding

As a former marketing director and all around social media guru, I love using my photography to help other small businesses strengthen their brands. One of my big goals for 2016 is to work more with small, local businesses to ensure the photography and imaging they are using online and off match what they are trying to convey with their brand. Small businesses especially have to work to cultivate their brand through their website and social media images, and providing them with one-of-a-kind photos ensures they will look polished, professional and amazing!

C4 Stying : Image Branding

C4 Styling recently launched a totally redesigned website, and I was so honored to be asked to provide the imaging for use on the website, printed materials and social media. I worked with C4 Styling’s Caitlin Fore on the concept and execution prior to our shoot. Caitlin is a style blogger and influencer, and also provides incredible personal styling for clients. She really wanted to show two basic tenants of what she provides clients, both the work she does online (blogging) and what she can provide clients in terms of personal styling services. Our shoot took place in two locations, Caitlin’s office and the boutique Anaphora, which is located in the Prairiefire Shopping Center in Leawood, Kansas.

C4 Stying : Image Branding

I am so happy with how this shoot turned out, and am so glad I was able to work with Caitlin to provide her with images that showcase the C4 Styling brand! If you’re interested in stepping up your online presence with images that reflect your unique brand, I’d love to work with you! Send me a note at megan@crazybananas.com for more information.

As a newborn photographer, you can never really predict how a session will go. Will the baby cry the whole time? Will the siblings be restless? Will mom and dad be so sleep deprived they don’t even notice I’m there? I always try to go into newborn sessions remembering how I felt a few days home with a brand new baby. I know for me, it was the best and the worst of times. While a new baby is something to cause extreme joy, it can also be the cause of complete overwhelm. So as I gear up for a newborn session, I remind myself the most important thing isn’t getting the perfect image (though…I do also strive for that!). The most important thing for me is for the experience to be as painless and easy as possible, because the last thing a family with a newborn needs is to be completely stressed out over one more thing.

You stand at the door, knock softly, and wait with bated breath. You’re about to meet a brand new person! And this time, I was definitely the lucky one. Sweet, little Lucy Elizabeth McGinnity was by definition a dream baby. The third born, Lucy has two big brothers, Henry and Clark, who are active and energetic…but Lucy just calmly slept, ate, and slept some more as her brothers told me all about their new baby.

As the youngest of three, I know Lucy will be well protected by her big brothers. Later, while her brothers had some rest time, I got Lucy all to myself. I admit, I got a little choked up. I mean, it wasn’t that long ago I had a brand new, dark-haired baby Lucy to dote on. Okay, it has been nine and a half years, but still, it feels like yesterday. There is just something pretty special about baby Lucy’s, especially ones with dimples, like this one!

I am so grateful to the McGinnity Family for allowing me to come into their home and document the newest addition to their family. Thanks to Sarah and Shea, and of course Henry and Clark, for having me! Family Photo Session : The Reetz Family

River Market : Reetz Family

Remember when it was 70 degrees and the trees were all different colors and we could wear light shirts without giant winter coats? Ahhh, the good old days! I have been reminiscing about my busy season last fall, and looking at these beautiful images of the Reetz family is making me want to find a time machine and head back. I was so excited when Kim contacted me about doing a session in the historic River Market district of Kansas City. While I adore big fields and rural backdrops, I love mixing in urban textures as well, and the River Market is the perfect place to do both!

Shoots with young children can always be a bit challenging, but the biggest tip I give parents is just to go with the flow. In my opinion, it’s a total game of chance whether you’ll get a toddler or preschooler to sit still long enough to take a posed photo, so I try to encourage families to play and I capture the moments as they do. This was a shoot where I was so glad both parents were extremely laid back, kind and ready to try anything. We all worked together as a team to get these gorgeous images, and I’m glad we did!

One other tip I like to give families is to make sure and encourage the older child just as much as the littler ones. Sometimes (and I’m totally guilty of this myself!) we get so caught up in getting our more active kid on camera, since they are harder to capture, that we forget to praise the older child. It’s hard having to sit still while your little sister runs all over the place! But again, this family totally blew me away. One of my favorite moments from this session was when they encouraged their adorable little guy to show me all of his ninja moves…this boy has skills! And it gave me some of my absolute favorite moments caught on camera!

I cannot WAIT until the weather starts warming up and the green begins to pop up all around town. The River Market is simply gorgeous in the spring, so if you’re interested in booking a session, send me at note at megan@crazybananas.com!
