As a newborn photographer, you can never really predict how a session will go. Will the baby cry the whole time? Will the siblings be restless? Will mom and dad be so sleep deprived they don’t even notice I’m there? I always try to go into newborn sessions remembering how I felt a few days home with a brand new baby. I know for me, it was the best and the worst of times. While a new baby is something to cause extreme joy, it can also be the cause of complete overwhelm. So as I gear up for a newborn session, I remind myself the most important thing isn’t getting the perfect image (though…I do also strive for that!). The most important thing for me is for the experience to be as painless and easy as possible, because the last thing a family with a newborn needs is to be completely stressed out over one more thing.
You stand at the door, knock softly, and wait with bated breath. You’re about to meet a brand new person! And this time, I was definitely the lucky one. Sweet, little Lucy Elizabeth McGinnity was by definition a dream baby. The third born, Lucy has two big brothers, Henry and Clark, who are active and energetic…but Lucy just calmly slept, ate, and slept some more as her brothers told me all about their new baby.
As the youngest of three, I know Lucy will be well protected by her big brothers. Later, while her brothers had some rest time, I got Lucy all to myself. I admit, I got a little choked up. I mean, it wasn’t that long ago I had a brand new, dark-haired baby Lucy to dote on. Okay, it has been nine and a half years, but still, it feels like yesterday. There is just something pretty special about baby Lucy’s, especially ones with dimples, like this one!
I am so grateful to the McGinnity Family for allowing me to come into their home and document the newest addition to their family. Thanks to Sarah and Shea, and of course Henry and Clark, for having me! I love the idea of homemade Valentines, but these days it’s not really something I put too much effort into. My kids would rather pull Star Wars prepackaged stickers off the shelves than have me make them something, and February is such a busy month, I’m happy to take the easy road on this one! But back in the day, I loved making special Valentine’s for my kids to share and trade with friends.
Remember these great Valentines from a few years back (when my kids loved the idea of homemade Valentines…ahhh the good ole’ days)? My friend Nicole of Petit Soul put them together for me, and the idea was a huge hit! Nicole had a chalkboard wall in her house, and we had Lucy write a Valentine’s Day note on it, then took photos of the kids in front. We had Lucy stand with her hands together, so we could punch holes and add in a lollipop as a little treat. Nicole also added a little extra flair in Photoshop, like the cute heart glasses. I then printed them out in color on heavy cardstock, cut, punched a few holes and voila!
Whether you’re a maker or a Target sale section shopper (I’ve been both, and they are both fabulous), I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day! Any day that celebrates the action of the love and the people we love is a-okay in my book!
Kansas City is such a fun place to be a creative. Now, mind you, I never, EVER thought I’d be a part of the creative community here, but now that I am, I’m constantly amazed by the cool work everyone is doing. I especially love watching people I’ve known for a while grow their creative endevours and become incredibly successful. This is definitely the case when it comes to Kristen Shuler of Hey Paul Studios!
You might remember Kristen from when she guest posted here on the blog waaaaayyyy back in the day (click here to read). Kristen and I met through mutual friends, and I think she’s such a kind, smart, crafty lady. We have both been working our butts off the past few years, and haven’t had as much time to connect, but I’ve been watching her adventures via social media. A few years ago, she started Eat Drink Stitch, a monthly series of embroidery happy hours, workshops and crafty events that rotate around various bars and restaurants in the Kansas City metro. Guest stitchers can choose between one of two embroidery designs that have been transferred onto fabric. Each unique pattern is created especially for the event.
I was so pumped to be the Guest Blogger at a recent Eat Drink Stitch event held at the Westport Flea Market. As a first time stitcher (and long time horrible crafter) I was a little nervous, but Kristen immediately put me at ease. Many of the guests in attendance were first timers, and Kristen wandered the room, helping get people started and helping them through rough spots.
The stitchers were able to choose from five different patterns, and each person received a mini stitch kit with everything they needed to complete their project. I sat at a super fun table with a few of Kristen’s old work colleagues, many of whom had never stitched before either! The Kansas City-themed pattern I chose was way more simple than it looked, and I was finished in about an hour. Stitchers can take as much or as little time to finish their projects, with most people finishing between one and two hours (while munching on snacks from the Flea Market, of course!).
All in all, I had a great time, and I am already planning attending another Eat Drink Stitch event soon with my book club! When my friends saw my photos on social media, they all wanted to know when we were going together!
