Hi, everybody! Welcome to yet ANOTHER new section here on Crazybananas, simply titled “Mom Style” because I’m not great at thinking up post titles. Score one for me.
My style has definitely evolved in a positive way since I had kids. I mean, you can find pictures of me out there as a young mom (and even before I was pregnant) and I look just ridiculous. Actually, that’s not accurate. I looked boring. I hadn’t found my style yet, and really looked like I felt, which was pretty blah. The past few years I’ve had a blast finding who I am in terms of my personal style, and lately I’ve been getting more and more comments from people wanting to know how to stay in the fashion loop after you have kids.
Let me preface this with a short statement: I am not a stylist, fashion expert or anything of the like. I simply love color and kooky clothes. And as I work for a bunch of engineers and am married to an IT guy, most of the comments I get regarding my clothes aren’t exactly positive. Some examples?
(Whilst wearing neon green pants) Um, I can’t hear you over those pants.
(From my 87 year old uncle) What the heck are those on your feet?! Shoes? Those are crazy.
(Sporting a polka dot dress and saddle shoes) I don’t mean to offend you, but are you trying to look old?
(Wearing my favorite glasses) Whenever I see you in those, I just want to ask you a bunch of math questions.
Yeah, so trust me, I’m not over here thinking I’m a fashion queen. But I have had good comments as well, usually from the cute barista at my local coffee shop. Obviously I’m totally legit. So I figured why not start a little style section that explores how to stay fresh fashion-wise when you’re forcing a one and a half year old into his carseat.
With that (rather long) explanation, here’s our first installment of Mom Style! Woohoo!
I am actually not a maxi dress person. I’ve been told they look good on taller people, but I’m no shorty (around 5’8″) and I’ve always felt they made me look like an oompa loompa. Imagine my surprise when my good friend (and evil shopping enabler) Lane told me I absolutely had to buy this dress during a store opening party last year. I followed her advice and thank goodness, because this dress is amazing. It totally feels like you’re wearing pajamas, it’s so comfortable. And though it’s low cut, which is perfect for summer at the beach, but no so perfect for time with kids who tend to pull on your clothes at any given moment, you can just throw on a cute jean jacket and you’re ready to go!
Also, can I just say that this is a total homage to being a semi-horder. This jean jacket is from Target, circa 2002, and I refused, REFUSED, to throw it away. I knew someday it’d be back in style.
Along with the accessories listed above, I am also wearing some cute teal, criss cross sandals from the Gap and pretty tourquoise earrings, but as this was our first Mom Style photoshoot, we didn’t end up with any pictures of those particular items. It may have been due to my husband pretending he was a high fashion photographer and shooting everything he saw while telling me to work it. When I looked at the images he captured, there were approximately five of me, three of our trashcan lid, several of the ground and many of the back of Tate’s head.
Tate’s head? Yes…here’s an example.
This was the last image of me on the memory card. I imagine I will be framing this one for the husband, as I’m sure he spends a lot of time looking at this face.
Thanks for playing along everyone! Let me know what you think of Mom Style (and if you have a better name, I’m all ears) in the comments.

Every year I am asked over and over again what I want for Mother’s Day. And really, I don’t want anything. I know, I know, I’m a saint. Or obnoxious. Whatever. But truly, all I really want for Mother’s Day is to a.) sleep in and b.) people to cook me food and serve me drinks, preferably with cute little notes alongside my breakfast dish. Also, I refuse to do any of the hard parenting stuff, like timeouts for toddlers or explaining to five year olds why they cannot attempt to fly off the kitchen counter. On Mother’s Day, I am immune.
However, since I am a loving and kind person, here (for those that have been asking, ahem, husband) is a list of a few things I would love to receive for Mother’s Day, ranging from the ridiculous expensive to cheap and sweet.
1. Madsen Bike – I’ve been jonesing for a bike for a while now, and this one comes complete with a child container. Now if only it came with a spill proof lid for said child container.
2. A Huge Canvas of Something Significant (Image via) – That sounds like the name of a bad movie. “A Huge Canvas of Something Significant,” coming May 2012. Anyway, I fill my house with these, so I’m always game for another. Maybe get a photo of the kids or one of an amazing piece of art that Lucy drew. Maybe a full sized photo of me, since I am the queen of this house, damnit.
4. 31 Bits Necklace – Have you guys heard of 31 Bits? Well, if not, get on it. This company sells jewelry made by women in Northern Uganda, and then uses the money it makes to set up services for these same women. It’s quite the incredible corporation, and you’d be supporting it and buying me something shiny. Win/win.
5. Flowers (image via astrasnotes)- Preferably wrapped in paper and preferably from somewhere local and awesome. I recommend Dutch Flowers in the River Market (P.S. On Saturdays, you can get all you can carry flowers for $5!).
6. Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Anna Quindlen – Pretty much every gift guide I know is prescribing this for moms this year, and I have to say, it looks incredible. (Hat tip to Cool Mom Picks for the recommendation!)
7. Encore Membership to the Kauffman Center in Kansas City – With an Encore Membership you get all sorts of perks, including early purchasing of tickets for big shows and discounts. At $50, this is a great gift!
8. Anything From J. Crew – This look should get you started. Better yet, just go for a gift card.
10. Copper Band Ring – Get names or dates printed on this puppy, and you’ll have a mama in tears. (Thanks again to Cool Mom Picks for the heads up.)

Dudes, it’s Friday! I can’t speak for any of you, but I spent most of this week a day ahead (for example on Tuesday I insisted all day it was Wednesday…the realization that I had to live through yet another Wednesday almost knocked me down) and I am so happy to have a few days to relax. Or in my case, a few days to have my toddler scream “NO!” at me while he pulls my hair. Score one for me.
Here are a few fun links to get you through the weekend:
– How to make a rad collage poster with your Instagram photos (via Fat Mum Slim)
– Are you pregnant? Are you not pregnant, like me, and hoping to have that glow without all the swelling and sleepless nights? Lane’s got the perfect product for you. (via Misc.)
– Amy Poehler might be my current girl crush. Her Courtney Cox impression solidifies my love. (via HuffPo Comedy)
– If you haven’t downloaded Jim Gaffigan’s new comedy special yet, you totally should. Unless you’re a whale, then you might be offended. But if you’re a whale, how are you getting the internet underwater? I’ve now confused myself.
And noooooowwwww, this week in Instagram photos:
See you Monday! I’ll bring the bourbon if you bring the cupcakes.
(And the machine to transport bourbon and cupcakes through the internet. I still haven’t quite figured that one out.)
