As much as I’ve tried to force my indie music mentality on Lulu, the girl just loves pop music. She begs for me to play the pop music radio station in the car, and wants to sing (loudly) along with Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. My big problem (besides the fact that I honestly just don’t dig that type of music*), is that most of the songs on pop radio are super sexualized. Especially if they are sung by a woman or girl, but even most of the songs by men are pretty raunchy. They don’t sound that bad until you hear a six year old belting it out of the backseat, and then you feel like a total creep.
So I’m officially on the lookout for some girl power pop music. Here is my current Top 3:
Janet Jackson – Rhythm Nation 1814: This was the very first CD I ever owned, given to me as a Christmas gift by my much older (and much cooler) sister. It still makes me want to dance.
Spice Girls – Spice Up Your Life: I’ve already talked about my undying love for the Spice Girls, but this is my favorite tune of theirs. Plus, remember when they used to do “Making the Video” on MTV? This was a total breakthrough…they’re flying!!!
No Doubt – Excuse Me Mr.: I was obsessed with Gwen Stefani in my teens, and I think No Doubt’s stuff holds up. Plus, she’s a rocker AND a girl, and unapologetic for both. This is the kind of pop star I want Lu to look up to.
I put this question on the Crazybananas Facebook page (have you joined yet?) and I got a ton of great responses ranging from Janis Joplin to TLC to Abba to Blondie to Joan Jett. What do you guys think? Any other girl pop stars out there that rock out without sexing it up?
*Obviously I know this whole conversation is in contrast to my feelings about Britney Spears, whom I love dearly, but still feel icky when I hear my 6 year old hear her lyrics.
**Wanted to clarify that, yes, I know the videos (unfortunately) are a bit sexualized, but I am talking about the music on it’s own…lyrically and suggestively. Girl power!

Hooray, it’s the weekend! This week, was, well, interesting. We started back to school on Monday, which went fairly well. The first full day was Wednesday, and that’s when pretty much everything feel apart. First, Tate had another breath holding spell at daycare and passed out. Apparently the stress of not being with his sister every day has taken it’s toll, and it all came apart when a teacher told him he couldn’t steal another kid’s toy. Quelle horror. Anyway, there was that. Then Lucy’s school called that afternoon to let us know 40+ kids had gone home sick and vomiting that day. They keep saying it’s the flu, but I’m more prone to think it’s food poisoning, especially since Lu brings her lunch and seems totally fine. They closed the school for a quarantine and it’s been closed ever since. So, there’s that. Then to top it off, we found out that an issue we had with bullying last year, which we were assured would not be a problem this year, has returned. Ugh. It’s been rough. But we’re hanging in there, and hoping for a fun and relaxing weekend before most of our activities start next week.

Here are some fun things from around the web this week:
I’m always looking for new ways to make bringing lunch to school more fun (especially after this week, oy), and these fruit stickers for kids’ lunches are easy and the templates are free!
This past weekend, the fabulous Lane came over to my house in her fancy high heels and made me a drink! I asked her to put together a few fun recipes for a “Crazybananas Cocktail” and the girl did not disappoint. This recipe is perfect for those hot, end of summer days. And it contains fruit so I would consider it quite healthy! This is probably why I’m not a doctor. Well, and the lack of medical degree.
Vodka Limeade with Watermelon Ice Cubes
What you need:
– watermelon
– vodka
– limes
– sugar
– fresh mint
How you make it:
A few hours before serving, cube watermelon into ice cube size pieces. Pop into the freezer on a baking sheet for a few hours or until frozen.
Make a simple syrup. Combine 1 c. sugar with 1 c. water over low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and add a sprig of mint. While the syrup cools, juice 6 limes. You’ll want about a 1/2 c. Stir together and add 2 jiggers vodka. Pour over your watermelon ice cubes. Drink with a fancier straw then the one I had on hand from Ikea. Or if you’re like me, just enjoy it regardless of the lack of pretty straws and stemware.

Even though we’re already back at school, I’m craving tons of stuff from the Cool Mom Picks Kids Back to School Guide. I may be purchasing some super hero sneaker wings for myself.
Are you all reading Colossal? It’s like candy for your eyes. This post with images of the surreal forests of Romania knocked me off my chair.
I think I need this Ryan Gosling coloring book.
Four girls are recreating their childhood pictures as adults. I love this idea!
