I’ve talked a little bit before about my talented niece, Sloan, who has been studying dance for many years. Well, my not-so-tiny dancer is turning 13-years-old tomorrow (!!!!) and for her birthday, she asked that I take some dance photos of her and her best friend. Both Sloan and her friend Caitlyn are serious dancers, and their talent blows me away. Sloan has spent the last few years working spectacularly hard on her craft, and I’m so proud of her dedication and grace. She loves dancing so very much, and her goal is to attend Julliard some day. I don’t know much about the art of dance, but I know when I watch her, I am constantly amazed by how easy she makes it look, when I know for a fact it’s incredibly difficult. And it’s pretty fun to watch someone you love do something they love to do. There isn’t anything better in my book.
We decided to do the shoot at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, because it is such a versatile location with the museum and the gardens surrounding it. We had a blast at the shoot, since the girls came equipped with tons of ideas and lots of enthusiasm. I feel grateful I was able to capture these two doing something they enjoy so much, and that I was able to contribute to a rad 13th birthday!

Gosh, I love New York. It’s always on my mind in the fall. It doesn’t help that I now have this movie on both DVD and on my iPad, so I can visit my favorite city whenever I please. The city is it’s own character in the greatest story, and I never tire of it.
Recently I’ve found myself singing the kids to sleep again. I don’t know when it happened or why…just one day I realized I’d sang them to bed for several nights in a row. Trust me, my voice is nothing worth writing home about, but I can carry a tune or two when the mood strikes me, and for whatever reason, our current winner is “Moon River.” Tate calls it the moon rainbow song, and he begs me to sing it over and over, while he holds my face between his hands. Lucy prefers it to be sung while I stroke her back. What is it about “Moon River?” Every time I almost make it through the whole thing, and then the tears start to flow. That happens to everyone, right? By the time I reach, “my huckleberry friend…” I’m doing my best to keep my voice from cracking and hold the whole thing together.
“Moon River” will always and forever remind me of New York, thanks to Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Audrey Hepburn singing it from a fire escape. So today while I think of my friends in that city, I’ll sing this tune as my babes drift off to sleep. And I’ll thank my lucky stars I live in a world where a dream like New York City is real life.
“Two drifters, off to see the world. There’s such a lot of world to see. We’re after the same rainbow’s end, waiting ’round the bend, my huckleberry friend, Moon River and me.”

Sometimes you just hear a band and their music sticks in your head and your heart for days after it leaves your ears. That’s how I felt the first time I heard Bastille’s “Pompeii.” And then I saw this acoustic version recorded in a museum in Paris. Le sigh. If your heart isn’t a little bit achy/joyous after hearing this, I think you might be broken.
And for those of you that crave a bonus track, Bastille doing a version of TLC’s “No Scrubs.” Yes it is.
