Advice Sought
Ever since we moved to the new house, I’ve been filling my days and nights with all sorts of projects. On top of my regular hobbies (photography, online scrapbooking, living, breathing, sleeping, painting), I’ve also found myself with a great new habit of reading right before bed. I never used to do this. In fact, I would usually be on the computer, in my bed, lights off, typing away, but I also dealt with a rather annoying bought of insomnia, and reading seems to quell that a bit. I’ve been through every book that I own, old and new, but I’m looking for some new stuff. I’d prefer something a bit light, as the heavy stuff doesn’t help much with the insomnia problems, but I’m having trouble finding where to start looking. You all are the smartest people I know (granted, I don’t know too many people)…any advice? What books would you recommend?
Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult – anything by her is really good!
The Janet Evanovich series. Laugh out loud hilarious. Start at the beginning with “One”.
well, other than romance novels… How is the candle book, btw? 🙂 These are old, but I actually enjoy them as they are not overly intellectual and I enjoy the plot/characters. Jean M. Auels the Clan o the Cave bear. It’s set in prehistoric times, the first book was published in the 70’s and is by far the best in the series. So it’s worth a shot.
The time traveler’s wife is a great book, I really enjoyed it
Water for elephants – OMG! It’s hilarious, twisted and a really good read.
Ok, your page doesn’t like me…
I have had to break this down into multiple reponses
For those nights when you want something really out of the ordinary try Sellevision (about a QVC type network, hilarious), and Middlesex (more disturbing, equally amusing).
Roald Dahl write hilarious short stories, great for evenings when you don’t want to get sucked into a novel
Memoirs of a geisha is also a great book, easy read and a good story
For the very odd, try Geek Love (not nerds, a Geek is the old term for the sideshow freaks who would bite the heads off chickens…)
Have fun!
I have both of Chelsea Handler’s books you are welcome to borrow. They are hilarious and super quick reads. She cracks me up. I also really like Ceclia Riverbank-she makes fun of the South a lot.
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle: A Novel by Haruki Murakami

Okay so I know you and I do not normallly read the same things…but I think you might actually enjoy this and then become in love with Murakami and want to read more of his books
I would say anything by David Sedaris or Augusten Burroughs.
